The 2009 NCAA Tennis Championships were recently held at the George P. Mitchell Tennis Center which is located in College Station, Texas. The Pac-10 men managed to come through with two different upsets during the quarterfinals of the tournament as USC managed to upset Virginia at No. 1 and UCLA managed to take out the No. 2 spot, Mississippi. The women's team in California also managed to follow suit by creating an upset of its own, taking out top ranking Northwestern with a 4-2.
The men's team from USC refused to lose focus to a number of distractions including an undefeated Virginia team, delays, wind and rain during the NCAA Quarterfinal tournament. The Trojans, sitting at No. 8 managed to shock the Cavaliers who were top seeded at the time with a 4-0 complete sweep during the College Station tournament. The winning effort on the part of USC actually began on Saturday, but it was Sunday that they were able to put the finishing touches on their play. It was a three-set clincher that came from Abdullah Magdas that allowed the Trojans to create such an upset during the quarterfinals. Now USC has a 23-5 overall record, which they will take when they move into the NCAA Semifinals against Texas on Monday the 18th of May in College Station.
USC is advancing to the NCAA semi-final tournament for the first time since 2004. The Trojans of USC were the first team to have defeated the undefeated and top-seeded Virginia in this entire season.
UCLA will also be advancing to the semi-finals of the NCAA with 21-4 after having taken out the second-seeded Mississippi with a 4-3 on Sunday. They will go on to face the No. 3. Ohio State with a 35-1 on Monday, the 18th of May. The Buckeyes managed to defeat Baylor with 4-1 on Sunday.
The No. 9-ranked women's tennis team from California managed to claim their 10th victory in a row at 21-4 with a 4-2 win over the top seeded and No. 1 ranked Northwestern on Sunday during the quarterfinal tournament. The Golden Bears are going to return to the NCAA semifinals for the third year in a row, and they will be going up against the No. 5 team, Notre Dame which sits at a 28-4. The match is scheduled to be held at 4 o'clock pm on the 18th of May.
The Golden Bears and Wildcats fought hard in one of the longest tennis matches of the year. California had to fight hard to notch a win against the Northwestern team, which was only their second loss in the entire schedule. The victory for the Golden Bears was sealed by No. 26 ranked Cossou when a come from behind win was completed over Georgia Rose, No. 20 with 4-6, 6-3, 6-3.
The semifinals are shaping up to be quite interesting this year, especially with so many upsets and surprising victories.
