2009 Purse for the US Open Tops the Records at $21.6 Million

usopenThe US Open purse for the 2009 competition is going to top $21.6 million, which is going to mark the third year in a row that the prize money for this tournament has increased by a sum of $1 million dollars. In addition to this base $21.6 million dollar purse, the top finishers in both the men's category and the women's category for the Olympus US Open could potentially win an additional $2,600,000 in bonus money during the US Open championship itself, which means that the potential complete and total payout for this tournament is $24.2 million dollars.

Both the men's singles champions and the women's singles champions for the US Open are going to earn a record shattering $1.6 million dollars, with the unique ability to earn another additional $1 million dollars worth of prize money, meaning that there is a potential to earn $2.6 million dollars total based on their performances throughout the US Open Series by Olympus. Additionally, both of the champions for the US Open, men and women, are going to receive a brand new 2010 Lexus IS, which is a stunning convertible.

The Bonus Challenge for the Olympus US Open Series is rewarding the top three men's players and the top three women's players that finish every year by offering them bonus money. This extra bonus challenge and the subsequent prizes have resulted in some of the largest paychecks in the entire history of tennis for men and women. Roger Federer walked away with $2.4 million dollars in 2007, and Kim Clijsters walked away with $2.2 million in 2005.

Base Prize Money for the US Open

The US Open purse for 2009 includes an increase of 5.8% in both men's singles prize money and women's in comparison to last year's purse record. For 37 consecutive years, the USTA is offering equal prize money both to women's players and men's players as well. This is a Grand Slam first and a tradition for the US Open that dates all the way back to 1973. All players are also going to receive payments per diem which will help with the costs associated with accommodations and traveling expenses.
