While many people are under the impression that learning tennis is nearly impossible, there are actually quite a few incredibly easy tips that can drastically improve your game. While these tips may not turn you into a star over night or land you at Wimbledon, they will help solid players get better and give beginning players the edge they need to take their game to the next level. There’s nothing difficult about these simple tips, but they do get big results.
1. Work on your swing.
If you have not had professional training on your swing, you may be missing out on the form that will help you improve your game exponentially. We always recommend getting at least one private lesson, and hopefully more, in order to learn how to develop the right swing. Once you have this down, you’ll have the power you need to hit any ball and hit it as hard as you like. Instead of focusing on learning new techniques, sometimes you have to go back to the basics if you want to get better.
2. Run less.
If you’re all over the court, you’re not only going to get tired, but you’re setting yourself up to miss shots. While you shouldn’t stand rooted in one place, you don’t need to travel all over the court either. Work on staying on the middle line and resist the urge to anticipate where your opponent is going to go with their next shot. Your body language will give away your intent and it’s all too easy to send it in the other direction.
3. Watching your opponent.
Speaking of body language, this can actually work for you instead of against you. Learn to watch the body language of your opponent and see if you can pick up what they are going to do. Most of us will unconsciously give away our movements, and if you’re perceptive, you can learn to accurately gauge what your opponent is going to do next.
4. Get mentally tough.
Tennis may be a physical game, but it is also a mental game, and you’ve got to be tough if you want to win. Get a few books on the mental game of tennis and learn how to start setting yourself up to win. This is probably the easiest ways to turn your scores around, especially if you already have a good foundation in training. Changing how you look at the sport will often change the entire way you play the game.
5. Never give up.
It is all too frustrating to be at the losing end of a match and at this point, many players throw in the towel. However, if you play each second of the game as hard as you can, you’ll be able to stay more motivated and you can also wear your opponent out. Never concede victory until the last ball is hit – if you do, you’re just giving away the game.
