At first glance it may appear as if tennis is an easy game for you to learn how to play. You simply have to lob a ball back and forth over a pretty low net, right? Well sure, tennis really is not that difficult to learn but there is a little more than this that you are going to need to learn and understand in order to get the most out of this game. You will quickly discover this when you begin to play. For example, serving is not all together very easy, and the scoring process in this game is another place for confusion.
If you are just introducing yourself to the world of tennis, then this guide is going to walk you through the basics of play, and will put you on the road to truly understanding how to get the most out of the game of tennis.
The Court -
The court that the game of tennis utilizes is 78 feet in length by 27 feet in width and there are a variety of different court surfaces that can be used, including but not limited to hard court surfaces, clay surfaces, carpeted surfaces and grass surfaces. The court is divided widthwise by a net, and the players are required to hit a ball over the net. There are baselines on each of the ends of the court, and serves are taken from the baselines and the ball must cross the net before it bounces. If the ball bounces out, it is considered to be out of bounds and as a result the hitter will lose a point. Each of the sides of the court has two white marks lining it to indicate the true width of the tennis court. Inner lines show the dimensions used for the purpose of singles play, and then outer lines are used to designate the width of the court for doubles play. There is also a short white line that divides the court into boxes known as the service court.
Play -
Tennis is capable of being played in a singles game, where there is one player on each of the sides of the net, or in doubles play, where there are two players in a team on each of the sides of the net. Each of the points is started out with a serve that is taken from behind the court's baseline. The ball has to bounce into the opposite side service court after crossing the net, and the point will continue until one of the players cannot hit the ball back, or if they lob the ball outside of the dimensions of the court. The game of tennis has a really unique scoring system that is unlike any other game, and learning the scoring system is an important part of learning how to play tennis.
