This week it tennis has been fairly busy, with players getting in the tune-ups that they need before Wimbledon. The men have been working out the kinks at the AEGON Championships and the Garry Webber Open. The women have been getting their last matches in with the AEGON Classic.
The Men’s side of the AEGON events featured an incredibly strong field. Players included Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic, Andy Murray, Andy Roddick, Marin Cilic, Gael Monfils, Sam Querry, and Feliciano Lopez.
A few high-ranked players struggled in this grass court championship at The Queens Club. Nadal made an early exit, losing to Feliciano Lopez in the quarterfinals of the tournament. Andy Roddick Struggled even more, leaving the tournament in the third round. Roddick, a four-time AEGON Championship winner, lost to Dudi Sela. Andy Murray also struggled in the third round, losing to Mardy Fish.
Mardy Fish was actually one of the two American men in the final at the AEGON Championships. Fish was pitted against Sam Querry, ranked 23rd in the world. Querry managed to take out Fish in two hard fought sets, winning 7-6(3), 7-5.
In doubles news, the team of Djokovic and Erlich beat out Beck and Skoch for the win, winning 6-7(6), 6-2, 10-3.
The Garry Weber Open featured a somewhat strong field of top ranked ATP players. Players that decided to tune-up at Garry Weber included Roger Federer, Nikolay Davydenko, Mikhail Youzhny, Juan Carlos Ferrero, Radek Stepanek, Jurgen Melzer, Marcos Baghdatis and Lleyton Hewitt.
There were a few surprises in this tournament, the first of five tournaments on Grass that lead up to Wimbledon. With two weeks until Wimbledon, the men are looking for any issues that they need to correct.
The final was composed of Lleyton Hewitt and Roger Federer. Roger Federer, as always, was the favorite to win this tournament. As the past champion from 2003 to 2006, and 2008, Federer flew through the first few rounds. Hewitt managed to topple the former champion in three sets, winning 3-6, 7-6(4), 6-4.
The AEGAN Classic was the completed women’s tournament this week, bringing together some big names for the first Wimbledon tune up. Some notable players in the AEGAN Classic included Na Li, Maria Sharapova, Yanina Wickmayer, and Aravane Rezai.
Li Na met Maria Sharapova in the final, bringing together a rematch from the semifinals of last year’s tournament. Li Na beat Sharapova once again, taking the championship in two sets, winning 7-5, 6-1. The win brought Li Na back to the top 10, after she fell to 16th earlier in the year.
In doubles, Cara Black and Lisa Raymond managed to take a win from Liezel Huber and Bethanie Mattek-Sands. The game was stopped at 6-3, 3-2 due to an injury to Huber, handing the game to Black and Raymond.
