The summer of contentment surrounding Roger Federer has shown absolutely no signs of abatement today, as this brand new father of twin girls took the win in the Cincinnati Masters event, which is the oldest tournament in all of America, and this year was the 111th incarnation. He managed to take the win against Novak Djokovic, who seemed sluggish, with a 6 - 1, 7 - 5 during an afternoon in Ohio that was unusually cool. With this additional victory, Federer has managed to establish himself as being a co-favorite as far as heading into the US Open goes. And since the US Open is slated to begin this following Monday, the timing is absolutely perfect.
Of course Federer is not the only one who should be feeling satisfied right now based on the recent on court happenings over the past week. The rest of the players in the Big Four, Djokovic, Murray and Nadal, all managed to display some truly solid form, and this is boding quite well for the upcoming US Open tournament. As it is looking like now, with the big four coupled with Andy Roddick as well as Juan Martin Del Potro nearing their peak form, it is going to be surprising if this isn't the most intensely contested tournament in many years.
Nadal is returning from a ten week absence away from the tour that was caused by a stubborn case of tendonitis. This absence managed to interrupt the truly extraordinary rivalry that has existed between him and Federer for four years now - And this took away the momentum of their rivalry and has shaken things up a bit. The good news, though, is that Rafael Nadal is slowly but surely returning to showcase his typical form and fashion. He managed to defeat three different opponents without having lost a set, and his play has been seen to improve with every match. Unfortunately, and quite surprisingly, Djokovic disposed of him during the semi-final match. Still, despite problems in his kenes, he was fast and had excellent footwork and movement which tells us that he is not currently having the issues with his knees, and should continue to uphold his excellent form coming into the upcoming US Open.
With all six of the top men being so seriously competitive as we head into the US Open, the first and most crucial predictor for the event is going to be the upcoming draw ceremony, which is slated to be held on the morning of Thursday. There are going to be two unlucky players out of that top four that will have to see Del Potro or Roddick in their draw. This is going to make the task of seeing triumph in New York much more difficult, if not completely impossible.
