On Thursday, Serena Williams ended up knocked out of the China Open tournament, having lost a match to Nadia Petrovia, who hails from Russia, with a final score of 6 - 4, 3 - 6, 7 - 6 (5), and this comes only a few days after she managed to regain her once-held World No. 1 rank.
Williams, who is going to be taking the top spot in the world rankings from Dinara Safina during this upcoming Monday looked surprisingly sluggish during the first set before she managed to recover during the second set. Neither of the two players was able to net a break during the third set.
Serena said that she never felt like she was able to get into high gear. She admitted that she had run into a player that hadn't ever played so well in her life. Petrova, who managed to finish with a total of 14 aces, said that the key to her win today was her strong serve.
Petrova is going to go on to face Peng Shuai, a player from China that recently eliminated Maria Sharapova on Wednesday with straight sets.
The departure of Williams marks the official exit of all three of the highest seeded players in the tournament, including Dinara Safina and Serena's sister, Venus Williams.
Marion Bartoli, playing for France, also managed to win by defeating Zhang Shuai, playing for China, with 6 - 1 and 6 - 4, allowing him to reach the tournament's quarterfinals. Agnieszka Radwanska from Poland managed to defeat Maria Jose Martinez Sanchez from Span with 4 - 6, 6 - 4, 6 - 2. Vera Zvonareva from Russia managed to defeat Flavia Pennetta from Itally with 6 - 3, 5 - 7, 7 - 5.
In the tournament's men's draw, Rafael Nadal managed to defeat James Blake from the United States with 7 - 5, 6 - 7 (4), 6 - 3, allowing him to reach the tournament's quarterfinal round. The second ranking Spaniard managed to net a match point opportunity during the second set, but then he double faulted and this allowed Blake to force a tiebreaker by breaking twice.
During the third set, Nadal managed to break Blake during the eighth game, allowing him to take the win when Blake's return on the match point crashed into the net. Nadal, who managed to save five out of six break points, said that he managed to play a really good match, and he felt as if he had the match under control. He managed to save the most important points, and he took the chance as soon as he had it.
Additionally, Ivan Ljubicic from Croatia has also advanced on to the quarterfinals after having defeated Lukasz Kubot from Poland with 7 - 6 (6), 4 - 6, 6 - 4.
