Here is an ATP preview for Hamburg in Germany and Indianapolis in the United States:
The beginning of the US Open tennis series is just beginning, and things are falling for Hamburg.
Take your pick for this upcoming week because the Tour has a little bit of something for just about everyone. Clay versus hard court, asphalt against dirt.
A little over a year ago the Hamburg Masters 1000 Series was in a truly pivotal point during the season for clay court play, and the best in the world were descending toward Germany so that they could iron out all of the final kinks before they headed into Roland Garros, but this is no longer the case. Sadly, since the Madrid Masters has been added to the circuit, Hamburg has unfortunately been relegated to a much smaller event, 500 points smaller to be exact.
The show is going to need to go on, however. Tournament director Michael Stitch is volunteering to come out of retirement so that he can raise some grandeur for the event. He is planning to play doubles alongside up and coming German tennis pro Mischa Zverev. This is some serious commitment to the cause.
Now, onto Indianapolis.
With not a single top 20 player present in Indianapolis, Indiana this week, there is an opportune moment that is awaiting each and every one of the 32 players that are present. The field this year is going to be led by Dmitry Tursunov, top seed, who is going to be looking to advance to his third final in three years. In the 2007 final he managed to defeat the Canadian Frank Dancevic, but in 2008 he lost to the defending champion Gilles Simon. He will be joining second seed Dudi Sela, along with third seed Sam Querrey, and the fourth seed is Igor Kinitsyn.
There are a number of other notable players that will be in the draw as well, including the recent Newport winner, who was Rajeev Ram, the 2007 finalist Frank Dancevic from Canada, and the flaky but still mightily dangerous Cypriot known as Marcos Baghdatis.
The top seeding Russian player is going to get a taste of his very own medicine as soon as he pushes through the gates when he goes up against Germany's big hitter, Michael Berrer. This player possesses a truly huge serve, and he is perceived to be one of the tour's most solidly built players. Luckily, Tursunov does move a bit better than Berrer does, and he should be able to move on fairly easily.
Round two is going to bring about another challenge when it comes to serving, this time in the form of a player that goes by the name of Taylor Dent. He is a wildcard recipient that has been working quite hard to regain the form that he had once, before he injured his back. Dent could quite possibly upset Tursunov's claim to the championship as early as in round two, but it will depend on his fitness at this point in the game.
