This week in tennis was pretty busy, with three different tournaments for the men and two for the women. The men competed in the ATP Studena Croatia Open, the Farmers Classic, and the Allianz Suisse Open. The women competed in the Bank of the West Classic and the Istanbul Cup. Both the men and women are preparing for the U.S Open, the grand slam coming up at the end of the month.
The Bank of the West Classic was held in Stanford, featuring major players including Samantha Stosur, Yanina Wickmayer, Marion Bartoli, Melanie Oudin, Dinara Safina, Maria Sharapova, Agnieszka Radwanska, and Elena Dementieva. Safina lost in the first round, marking the only major upset of the first round. Wickmayer lost to Stosur in the third round, as did Marion Bartoli. Sharapova managed to oust Dementieva in the same round, winning in three sets. Maria Sharapova and Azarenka made it to the finals, with Azarenka pulling out the win.
The Istanbul Cup also featured few big names, including Francesca Schiavone and Andrea Petkovic. Francesca Schiavone lost in the second round to Elena Baltacha. Anastasia Pavyluchenkova and Elena Vesnina made it to the final. Pavyluchenkova came out with a win, beating Vesnina in three sets, 5-7, 7-5, 6-4.
The Men’s Allianz Suisse Open featured a couple of big names, including Mikhail Youzhny, Nicola Almagro, and Richard Gasquet. Youzhny lost in the third round to Yuri Schukin of Kazakhstan, while both Almagro and Gasquet made it to the final. Nicolas Almagro won the tournament in two sets, winning 7-5, 6-1.
The ATP Studena Croatia Open featured plenty of different big names. Some of the players in the field included Jurgen Melzer, Ivan Ljubicic, Nikolay Davydenko, Juan Carlos Ferrero, and Juan Ignacio Chela. All of the big names in the tournament managed to make it through to the second round. Ljubicic lost in the third round to Starace of Italy, while Davydenko lost in the third round to Chela. Melzer also lost in third round to Seppi of Argentina. Juan Carlos Ferrero and Starace made it to the final. Ferrero finally pulled out the wine, taking the tournament in two sets, 6-4, 6-4.
The Farmers Classic was the largest of the three, featuring plenty of top-notch players, including Andy Murray, Sam Querrey, Marcos Baghdatis, Feliciano Lopez, Janko Tipsarevic, and James Blake. The big names in this tournament also managed to make it through to the later rounds of the tournament. Tipsarevic managed to take out Baghdatis in the third round, while Lopez managed to take out Blake. Andy Murray and Sam Querry met in the finals of the tournament, with Querry taking the match 5-7, 7-6(2), 6-3.
