Baghdatis Takes Title in Stockholm ATP World Tour Tournament

Marcos BaghdatisIn Stockholm, Sweden, Marcos Baghdatis managed to take his first title in the ATP World Tour since February of 2007, after having defeated Oliver Rochus from Belgium with 6 - 1, 7 - 5 during the If Stockholm Open during Sunday. He has become the tenth unseeded winner to claim a title during the ATP World Tour during this year, and he has been the first since a Brazilian player by the name of Thomaz Bellucci won during the Allianz Suisse's Open Gstaad on August 2.

Baghdatis is currently ranked No 66 in the world, and he earned a total of €93,000 in prize monies, and he managed to win 250 points for the South African Airways ATP Ranking for 2009. His competitor, Oliver Rochus walked away with €49,000 in winnings as well as 150 points.

Marcos Baghdatis said that he was proud of his play during the first set. He knew that it would be important for him to get a really good start, but he recognized that Oliver Rochus stepped things up during the second set. He felt lucky after the match to have won in two straight steps in the end. He admitted that he wanted to win this tournament very badly, because it was a big chance for him to win yet another title, and luckily he managed to find the necessary solution to net that win.

Marcos Baghdatis also won a third title in the ATP Challenger Tour last week by defeating Istomin in Tashkent has made a truly confident start during this seventh final for the ATP World Tour.

The 24yr old managed to convert his 3rd breakpoint opportunity during the 4th game and yet another in his sixth game. He won sixty six percent of service points, and managed to hit eight aces in the first forty minute set.

At the beginning of the second set the pair exchanged service breaks, and did so again in the 6th and 7th games. Baghdatis, who happened to beat Rochus at the 2006 Internazionali BNL d’Italia at Rome, broke serves five times in the eleventh game and followed by wrapping up his victory in all of one hour and thirty nine minutes.

Baghdatis won sixty two percent of service points, smashed 5 aces, and handily saved 4 of 6 break points. This was his 3rd ATP World Tour win, being his 1st since February fourth of 2007, located at the PBZ Zagreb's Indoors.

Marcos Baghdatis says that it has been a long time since he has managed to win a tournament in the ATP. The last time he won one was in February of the year 2007, so he is really happy to have another win under his belt now. He has had a tough few years, and he was not expecting this title which makes it even sweeter for him.
