In tennis a “set” is a series of games wherein alternating service is utilized. A set ends when a specified number of games are complete. Players alternate serves and alternate ends of the court prior to each odd numbered game. So basically, games are played to make a set, and a complete set is called a match.

 

A set will consist of several games. Traditionally, a set isn’t considered “won” until a player has won a minimum of six games and is at least two games up on his or her opponent. Prior to the origination of the tie-breaker system in the early 70s, players would continue to engage in games until both of the above criteria were met. After the onset of the tie-breaker system, When and if the score reaches a total of 6 to 5, players will engage in one additional game. At that point, should the leading athlete win the game (bringing the score to 7-5), he or she also wins the set. However, should the trailing athlete win the game (bringing the score to 6-6), a tiebreaker is played. The set tiebreaker is won when the score ratio reaches 7 to 6.
