The type of string used in your tennis racquet can have a dramatic impact on the racquet’s overall perfrormance. The string choice impact intensifies with the experience level of the tennis player. The more expert your level of play, the more noticable racquet stringing will become. As such, there is a wide variety of varying materials and compounds thereof, used in the manufacture of tennis string.

Some tennis string is made of natural gut fiber. Natural gut fibers are considered an elite string choice. Natural gut fibers are widely accepted as the very best in terms of tennis string. It is said to have the greatest “playability” and offers the player more control and power. The downside to natural gut fiber is that it has a high breakage tendency along with a high cost. Thusly, this string is commonly used by professional tennis players rather than the casual athlete. Believe it or not, natural gut fiber is made of dried cow (and occasionally sheep) intestine.
Some other tennis string fibers include synthetic gut, (utilized by most tennis players). These synthetic gut strings include nylon, (made popular by its heavy wear-resistance), polyester (designed with the “string-breaker” in mind; this string has very high durabilty), and kevlar, that’s right, kevlar (popular because of its strength and stiffness). Most often, kevlar string is woven with a second string like nylon, because alone, Kevlar can be too stiff (no surprise as kevlar is the same material used in the production of the bullet proof vest).
