There’s a reason that this is the number one selling entry level racket for adults in the United States. It’s one of the best we have actually used and it’s weighted perfectly for beginners. This was a defeat which was unexpected on a few different levels. Not only was Stepanek an unseeded player going into the tournament. He was also winless for 2.5 years. The relatively old player at 32 was able to secure his victory over the top-seeded Monfils through what can only bev described as better playing.

Monfils would like to cite his lack of rest for his inability to secure the win. He cites the fact that he was playing the previous evening until 4am and that he was just not as fast as he wanted to be. Whether the 11 hours was enough time for him to rest or not, it was clear that he was simply not playing at the same level as Stepanek.

The final game of the tournament was decided by a score of 6-4, 6-4. The main reason why most point out that Stepanek was able to win was the fact that he was able to dominate at the net. He was able to score 29 of the 39 trips that he took forward. This was enough to make Monfils stick to the baseline. In fact, the top-seeded player only came forward four times.

In the end, Monfils had to submit that Stepanek was definitely more aggressive than he was. With all of the time that he spent at the net, it seemed like he was trying to make up for the fact that he had not won a title since San Jose in February of 2009. Maybe going so long without a title caused the 32 year old to be hungrier.

The win marks Stepanek as the oldest winner of the Legg Mason Tennis Classic Jimmy Connors won it in 1988 at the age of 35. While he was not able to produce some of the athleticism that spectators remarked that Monfils showed, he was able to get the job done to win the tie breakers and earn the title.

Many are marking this tournament as the last tune-up on hard courts before the U.S. Open. While it is unclear who will win that tournament, it has been made apparent to everyone that you can never count any player out. Any time that you think that you will be able to call the winner, there always seems to be an upset which will cause you to reevaluate your thinking. This week, we were reminded by Stepanek who takes home a purse of $264,000. Only time and some superb playing will tell who will be the next champion to be able to bring in the next championship title. We will all be watching to find out.

The gameplay between the two was brilliant with a score for the game of 5-7, 6-4, 6-4. The total time for the game was about 15 minutes shy of 3 hours. The extended workout was difficult on both players, but in the end, it was more than Fish could handle. It helped the young player to have more confidence after not winning a match for two months.

Along with beating the top-ranked American player, Gulbis also was able to best Xavier Maisse, no. 9 and Juan Martin Del Potro, once former champion. The crowd was able to enjoy watching Gulbis pump his fist in victory and flash the peace sign at the crowd. It was a big win for the young player from Latvia who is noted for enjoying partying and even spending a night in jail before a tournament.

While many people remember Gulbis for breaking his racquet in anger at the ATP tour, there was no need for that kind of anger on Sunday. Having only lost two sets on his way to a victory, it was made clear that the win was not a fluke. It is clear that the ability to win on this level is completely within his grasp.

Much of the win which Gulbis was able to enjoy has been attributed to the new coach which he just started with. Guillermo Canas has been able to help Gulbis to regain his focus so that he will have less of a desire to party all night and more of a desire to keep his eyes on the prize. This showed to be a good lesson to learn seeing as the check for $113,000 is his to take home and now he will be able to enjoy a lofty spot at 57 from where he was at 84.

This was even more surprising of a win for Gulbis since Fish is just fresh from his win at the Atlanta Tennis Championship and had more aces and fewer unforced errors. The way that Gulbis was able to secure the victory was by using consecutive drop-shots. This sent Fish running after the ball more than once and made it difficult for him to be able to make the shots which would secure the victory.

Gulbis is just as surprised as anyone to be taking away the title from the UCLA tennis courts. He felt that Fish was going to win the match since he was not able to get any serve past him. In the end, Gulbis was able to enjoy a sweet victory against a great player.

The gameplay leading up to Fish being able to win over John Isner was not an easy win. In fact, in the second set, Fish had to dig deep to keep from allowing Isner to get two straight match points. The two battled it out for every point until it appeared that Isner had lost a lot of his momentum which had carried him through the first couple of matches. Each set looked to be more and more favored towards Fish until he was finally able to secure the win.

Fish is a rising star with this win over Isner. He was able to stop Isner from completing the same feat he accomplished last year by winning two events in a row with the wins at Newport and Atlanta. While Fish has a record at the ATC of only 6-12, his record against Isner is another matter. With a 3-1 career record against his fellow countryman, it appears that he knows exactly what he must do in order to secure a victory for himself.

Isner was crestfallen about losing the title as it seemed to be right in his grasp whenever he had the serve on match point. If he could have held on to his serve and made the most of the opportunity, he would have had the back to back titles he craved. It seems like he will take it in stride as he realizes that these kinds of things happen and he will simply have to concentrate more on the next game.

It is likely that we have not heard the last from either of these two highly competitive players. Many think that it is possible that Isner will be able to accomplish the feat of back to back titles soon. With it so close within his grasp this last time, there is no reason to think that he will not be able to rally up to provide the win that he desires to have. Only time will be able to tell what is in store for this great player.

In doubles, Matthew Ebden from Australia teamed up with Alex Bogolomov Jr. to defeat the German doubles team of Frank Moser and Matthias Bachinger. The game was a close one with a score of 3-6, 7-5, 10-8. What seemed like it would be an endless tiebreaker turned out to be a victory for the Australians. It was a lot of fun to watch because the two teams seemed to work in unison making sure that balls were picked up and that opportunities were made the most of.

Palermo Open

At the Palermo Open, Anabel Medina Garrigues was able to secure the title in a sweeping victory over Polona Hercog. The victory was decided in a 6-3, 6-2 match which was played out on Sunday. The young player is now ranked fifth as a result of her victory. This victory also marks the fifth time that she has been able to secure the title at this particular tournament. She is now also the holder of the distinction as the person to hold the most titles (10) over the previous champion Venus Williams (9). The defeat for Hercog was an end to the nine match streak that she was on. The seventh seeded player from Slovenia won her first title last week in Sweden.

Mercedes Cup

The Mercedes Cup was almost derailed by rain. After the extensive rain delay was over, Juan Carlos Ferrero was able to finally secure the title by defeating Pablo Anujar. The 6-4, 6-0 victory was a decided victory for the 31 year old player. The finale was fun to watch with both of the players competing being from Spain. The victory was made even sweeter for Ferrero because it was his third tournament after returning from injuries to the wrist and knees. The injuries took him out of the game for two months, but they apparently did not take away his competitive spirit. The win after the 3 hour rain delay marks the 16^th career title for Ferrero. While this was the first win since his win in Umag, Croatia in August of last year, many are keeping an eye on him to see what is next.

Swedish Open

Some of the biggest names in tennis were playing at the Swedish Open. It is no surprise to many that Spain’s own David Ferrer was not able to secure a victory at this tournament. He was defeated by Robin Soderling of Sweden in a 6-2, 6-2 victory. This marks the second time in three years that Soderling has been able to secure this title. It is a crushing victory against one of the top players in the world at the moment. Soderling, who is ranked fifth was able to secure the victory by winning 32 points against the sixth ranked Ferrer. This makes a record of 10-4 between the two players. Ferrer made a valiant effort to turn the tide on Soderling by winning two straight games, but it was not enough to stop the momentum that has already been created. In the end, it simply was not enough.

Of course, the match between Feliciano Lopez and Andy Roddick was cancelled on Sunday night as a result of the victory for Ferrer. Roddick was hoping to get another shot at securing a win after his loss to Ferrer on Friday. He did not get his chance as the Spaniard was able to take his place among his teammates as they celebrated their victory.

The final match was determined in a score of 7-5, 7-6(3), 5-7, 7-6(5). Just looking at the numbers is enough to tell you that none of the sets were won easily. The two athletes battled out each point to win the games and the sets. In the end, Ferrer was able to secure the victory of Fish when a return shot was wide. Ferrer was overcome with joy as he jumped into the team captain’s, Albert Costa’s, arms and celebrated.

This final defeat was also after Fish fell to Lopez on Friday. In fact, the only point that the Americans were able to receive came as a result of doubles play on Saturday morning. Many are looking at Fish as a main cause of the loss with 20 unforced errors in his match against Ferrer. He was so frustrated by his performance that he actually broke his racquet after losing one of the points.

The defeat was not only a letdown for Fish and the rest of the Americans. It was also a resounding loss for the fans. They were cheering every point and every game won by Fish. When Ferrer was able to defeat him in the final point, the crowd could hardly believe that the match was over and that Spain had advanced to the next round over America.

This is not to say that Ferrer and his teammates did not have the support of the crowd. There were plenty in attendance willing to celebrate right along with the athletes. While the fans supporting the team were much smaller in number, they were loud enough to make their presence known. They also surrounded Ferrer to get autographs form their star.

Spain will move on to the Semifinals where they will battle once again to move into the finals. If Ferrer and Lopez and the rest of the team can keep it up, they look to be a force to be reckoned with. All eyes will be watching to see what is next for this team as it was truly an upset for the Americans.

The first unexpected winner to surface was Novak Djokovic. While his gameplay throughout this last year has been as close to perfect as you can get, he still had not been able to beat out Rafael Nadal in any Grand Slam match. It seemed to be his Achilles heel. There was no better way to end the streak of losses to Nadal than in the final of Wimbledon.

Djokovic will take home the trophy, but not without having to earn it first. He had to push through a hard won match with scores like 6-4, 6-1, 1-6, 6-3. The scores tell you about how there was no way to be able to tell from one point to the next who was going to win the set let alone the match. Every point was earned on both sides of the court.

Making the title even that much sweeter for Djokovic is the fact that he was able to secure the win regardless of the fact that this is first title he has even won on grass courts. He was so happy that he took a few extra moments to let the victory settle in before tossing out rackets into the crowd.

The women also saw a major upset whenever Petra Kvitova took the title away from Maria Sharapova. Among the different things that were stacked against Kvitova is that she has never been to Wimbledon before, Sharapova is a three time title winner and Kvitova is ranked much lower. This did not stop Kvitova from bringing out everything in her arsenal to secure a lopsided victory.

One of the secrets to her success was that she faced the finale as if it was not the last game in the tournament. She went out with the mindset that she was playing a fourth round game rather than the final. The strategy evidently worked because she was able to secure victory in short order by winning 6-3, 6-4.

Winning her first Grand Slam trophy is not expected to be the last that we hear from this relative newcomer to the scene. She has been trained by David Kotyza who expects that she will be able to maintain this level of performance. He had no doubts that the eight-seeded player would be able to rise to the occasion of the Wimbledon championship play. He was right and it looks like there is a new face to watch in the women’s singles. Most people are expecting to see more great matches between these two powerhouse players.
