Davis Cup, Campbell’s Hall of Fame Tennis Championships, Collector Swedish Open

The week following Wimbledon was still relatively busy, featuring multiple men’s and women’s tournaments with few big-name players. The men were busy with the Davis Cup and the Campbell’s Hall of Fame Tennis Championships, while the women battled it out in the Collector Swedish Open.

The Davis Cup Quarterfinals brought some exciting tennis and some unexpected results. In a complete shocker, France took out defending champion Spain with a 5-0 sweep. Gael Monfils took out David Ferrer in 5 sets, and Giles Simon took out Nicolas Almagro. Other French winners included Michael Llorda over Verdasco, Julien Benneteau over Lopez, and the Benneteau/Llorda team over Lopez/Verdasco.

Argentina advanced over Russia with a 3-2 win, thanks to Nalbandian. Nalbandian won both of his games over Davydenko and Yozhny, with the doubles team of Schwank and Zeballos rounding out the win.  Serbia beat Croatia 4-1, with Djokovic taking both of his matches. The Czech Republic faired the same, taking out Chile 4-1. Ivo Minar won both of his matches to cap off the win.

In other news, the Campbell’s Hall of Fame Tennis Championships were held in the US, the only professional grass-court tournament in North America. Played in Newport, Rhode Island, players included Sam Querrey, Taylor Dent, Nicolas Mahut, and Mardy Fish.

The bigger names in the tournament managed to fall relatively easily. Sam Querrey lost in the second round to Dustin Brown of Jamaica. Taylor Dent lost in the first round to Go Soeda of Japan. Nicolas Mahut, who recently found fame thanks to this Marathon Match at Wimbledon, lost in the second round to Frank Dacevic of Canada.

Mardy Fish managed to come out ahead, taking his fourth ATP tour trophy with a 5-7, 6-3, 6-4 win over Olivier Rochus. The game lasted a few minutes took 2 hours, with Fish firing 24 aces in his first Grass-Court tournament win. Fish took home $75,700 with the win.

One the Women’s side, up-and-comers challenged some seasoned professionals at the Collector Swedish Open in Bastad. Some of the names in the tournament included Flavia Pennetta, Karolina Sprem, Lucie Safarova, and Aravane Rezai. Flavia Pennetta made it through the fourth round, losing to Gisela Dulko of Argentina in the semi-finals. Safarova suffered the same fate, losing to Rezai in the semi-finals.

Dulko and Rezai met in the finals, with Rezai taking the tournament in a 6-3, 4-6, 6-4 win. Rezai almost lost the game in the third set before putting together a string of games. In an interesting twist, Dulko and Pennetta played in the doubles final on the same team. They managed to take out Voracova and Strycova for the win.

The Women will play next week in the XXIII SNAI Open in Italy and the ECM Prague Open in the Czech Republic.  The men will clash in the Mercedes Cup and the SkiStar Swedish Open.
