World No. 5 Andy Roddick went up against World No. 6 Juan Martin Del Potro and the two men really slugged it out during the final tournament for the Legg Mason Classic which was held on Sunday. The results were Juan Martin Del Potro winning with 3 - 6, 7 - 5, 7 - 6 (6). Juan Martin Del Potro won the match only after a video review managed to show that his crosscourt forehand wasn't out. Juan Martin Del Potro has won the tournament now for a second year in a row. Last year when he played, the event was part of a 19-match long winning streak that he managed to take into the US Open championship tournament.
After Andy Roddick took a los to Roger Federer during a truly epic Wimbledon final, he had to take an entire month off in order to nurse an injury sustained by a hip flexor. He has always seemed to perform well in Washington, and has won there three times, one of which was two years ago. Now Roddick is going to the Rogers Cup located in Montreal, Canada, where he is going to be preparing for the next round in preparation for the US Open.
Coming in here after he was off for a month made Roddick want to figure out where his form was at, according to interviews with reporters. He claimed to want to get a lot more matches in so that he could put himself on the right path toward achieving a win at the Open.
The most curious match that is on the schedule for the upcoming Montreal tournament on Monday happens to be in the doubles draw. Rafael Nadal is actually scheduled to be playing with his fellow Spaniard, who is Francisco Roig, and they are going to be playing against Novak Djokovic along with Dusan Vemic.
At the Los Angeles Women's Tennis Championships, Samantha Stosur was defeated by Flavia Pennetta. Pennetta won with 6 - 4, 6 - 3. Despite having achieved a loss, Samantha Stosur rose to a new rank, a career high for her at World No. 17. She made a splash when she managed to reach the French Open's semifinals. After reaching the final as well as the semifinals which were at Stanford last week, she's managed to climb significantly in rank.
The women's tour is now heading to Cincinnati, where there will be a number of notable matches in the first round including Melanie Oudin against former world No. 1 Ana Ivanovic as well as Marion Bartoli against Kim Clijsters.
So not only has this been a productive week in the world of Tennis, but a sign of interesting and exciting things to come as well. Keep watching.
