Different Tennis Ball Types

ballsIf you think that all tennis balls are simply fuzzy yellow balls and that all are alike, then you are absolutely wrong! Tennis balls have a lot more to them than this. Here is some basic information on tennis balls that you may not already be aware of. If you are interested in the game of tennis in any way, shape or form, then understanding the truth behind tennis balls is pretty important.

Pressureless and Pressurized Tennis Balls -

- There are two primary types of tennis balls; pressureless tennis balls and pressurized tennis balls.

- Pressurized tennis balls are tennis balls with a hollow core that is filled with air. Some tennis ball makers use nitrogen rather than regular air in the center, because nitrogen tends to last longer. Pressurized balls eventually lose their pressure after about a month following the opening of the pressurized can that they come in. As they lose their pressure, they become "dead", which means that they cannot bounce nearly as well as before.

- Pressureless balls, on the other hand, have a completely solid core. These tennis balls are excellent for anyone who does not play tennis very often. These tennis balls do not lose their bounce because they do not change in consistency over time. However, the felt will slowly wear off the outside of the ball which means they do eventually need to be replaced either way.

Regular Duty Tennis Balls, Extra Duty Tennis Balls and High Altitude Tennis Balls -

- When you purchase tennis balls, the container that they come in should give you a clear indication of what type of balls they are, as there are numerous to choose from including regular duty tennis balls, extra duty tennis balls, or high altitude tennis balls.

- Regular duty tennis balls are for indoor courts and clay courts. Extra duty balls would become too fuzzy if they were used on these courts.

- Extra duty tennis balls are ideal for tennis courts and grass courts.

- High altitude tennis balls on the other hand are best used for high altitude places like Denver, where you would be playing at an altitude of 4,000 feet or more above the sea level. These balls have a completely different level of pressure. A regular ball would bounce too much if used in this elevation.

The Fuzziness Factor -

- Without the fuzziness of a tennis ball, the tennis game would be completely different because it is the fuzz that creates the friction that the ball needs. The ball's fuzziness creates drag in the air, which makes the topspin and the backspin of the ball more possible and more pronounced.

Numbers on Tennis Balls -

- The numbers on your tennis ball are there simply for your own benefit. They allow you to differentiate between your tennis balls and your opponents, but they do not tell you much else about the balls themselves.
