Here are nine really basic facts about tennis racquet strings that from the United States Racquet Stringers Association. These nine facts about tennis racquet strings are presented in a general sense, as they are not always true for all tennis racquets or racquet players. As players increase their capabilities on the court, these rules may change.

  1. String tensions that are lower are capable of generating more power, provided that movement of the strings does not occur.
  2. String tensions that are higher are capable of generating more control over the ball for players that are more experienced at hitting.
  3. Longer lengths of the string or a longer string plane area is capable of producing more power.
  4. A decreased string density, or fewer strings on the racquet, is capable of generating more power.
  5. Thinner strings are capable of generating more power.
  6. More elastic strings are capable of generating more power, and the thing that is going to produce the additional power is also capable of absorbing more of the shock load during the impact.
  7. Softer strings, and strings that have a softer coating, generally do not vibrate as much.
  8. Thinner strings are generally capable of producing more spin.
  9. Decreased density of the strings, or fewer strings on the racquet is capable of producing more spin.

Ten Facts About Racquets -

These ten facts about tennis racquets are presented as general tips and facts, and reflect a majority rule. That is to say, while these facts are true for most tennis racquets, they are not always true for all tennis racquets. The only way to know what type of tennis racquet will work best for you is to experiment until you find the right weight, stiffness and size of the racquet to suit your own personal needs.

  1. Heavier frames tend to be capable of generating an increase in power.
  2. A heavier frame is generally capable of vibrating less.
  3. Heavier frames tend to have much larger sweet spots.
  4. A stiffer frame is generally going to be capable of generating an increase in power.
  5. Stiffer frames are generally capable of having larger sweet spots.
  6. A stiffer frame is capable of transmitting more of the shock load to the player's arm than a more flexible frame would.
  7. Larger frames generally are capable of generating more power.
  8. A stiffer frame is generally capable of providing a more uniform response of the ball across the entire plane of strings.
  9. A larger frame is generally much more resistant to any twisting.
  10. A larger frame generally has a much larger sweet spot.
