Federer Wins BNP Paribas Open

Roger Federer defeated Victor Hanescu in round 2 of the BNP Paribas Open last weekend in Indian Wells, California. They finished 6-3, 6-7 (5), 6-1, with Hanescu offering much more challenge for Federer in the middle of the match and fading pretty quickly in the end. Hanescu, a Swiss player who played this weekend for the first time since the season-opening Australia Open, managed 10 aces and 62 winning shots. He's not eliminated by the loss, but will face Marcos Baghdatis, seeded number 27, in round 3.

Federer said he was happy with how he played and that it was a good match even though he missed some clutch serving when he shouldn't have. Roger Federer is the top tennis player in the world and the one to beat in the end at this tournament, thanks to having won here twice before. Tennis fans and professionals are looking forward to the quarterfinals and a potential matchup between Andy Roddick and Federer. Roddick is seeded 7th for this event. Roddick defeated Taiwanese Yen-Hsun Lu this weekend with 6-4, 6-4 to advance.

Andy Murray, seeded number 4 and the runner-up here in 2009, advanced after a 6-4, 6-4 defeat over Andreas Seppi. Roddick appeared unhappy with the match and perhaps himself as he gestured and mumbled to himself each time a shot went foul, particularly near the end of the match. Not resting on his win, Murray went right for the practice tennis court after the match and told reporters that it had been scrappy, and though he'd been pretty comfortable there had been some tight moments. He expected the next round to go easier for him at least as far as being comfortable with the play and the conditions.

Nikolay Davydenko, a top Russian player who's seeded at 5 for this event and was expected to make a winning showing, had to withdraw from the tournament. His left wrist is broken, leaving the #6 player in the world unable to play. The injury is expected to keep him away from the court for at least 4 weeks, the length of time his wrist will be in a splint. He injured his wrist in February in Rotterdam during a fall but tests didn't show the fracture. He was scheduled to play against Serbian Viktor Troicki in round 3.

Thanks to his withdrawal, Troicki now advances to round four after only playing one actual match. Troicki is seeded 29th for the event, but has only had to play once. He won the first round, but his second round opponent also had to withdraw. Pablo Cuevas had back problems and withdrew, allowing Troicki to advance to round 3. Now that he's advanced to round 4, he'll face either Tomas Berdych or Fernando Verdasco, neither of whom seem on the verge of withdrawing.

Davydenko's year started well with a defeat over Rafael Nadal in January to give him his 20th ATP win. Federer eliminated him during the Australian Open quarterfinals. He injured his wrist during the next tournament but the break wasn't diagnosed properly, and had to withdraw in Dubai because his wrist swelled and began to hurt.
