When the dust settled from the epic battle between Roger Federer and Andy Roddick, Federer managed to capture a fifteenth Grand Slam title after a classic five-set Wimbledon match.
The final scoring was 5 - 7, 7 - 6 (6), 7 - 6 (5), 3 - 6: 16 - 14 in Roger Federer's favor.
Roger Federer proudly hoisted his trophy up over his head, celebrating having made Grand Slam history. A year ago he walked away from an epic Wimbledon final where he left a broken man, losing his title and his aura of being invincible, but he seems to be on track again. He wagered a five set marathon against Andy Roddick on Sunday, and now he holds the most prestigious record in the entire sport of tennis.
This time around, the tide shifted in his favor and the winner's trophy is his once more. Now he has the No. 1 world ranking in his grasp once more, and he is once again enhancing his reputation as being the greatest player in all of history. He outlasted Andy Roddick this weekend, took a sixth championship in Wimbledon and took is 15th Grand Slam all at once in a match that by the final set had gone through 30 games.
The Wimbledon men's championship final is going to air a few more times in ESPN Classic on Monday in slots of 5 hours each, first at 9 o'clock am, then 2 o'clock pm and again at 7 o'clock pm. You can also watch the tournament championship match on ESPN360.com beginning Monday morning. The women's final is also going to be available online at ESPN360.com.
Federer managed to serve a career high with 50 aces, overcoming the major titles record that he shared with Pete Sampras when he defeated Andy Roddick this weekend. The final score was 5 - 7, 7 - 6 (6), 7 - 6 (5), 3 - 6: 16 - 14 in Roger Federer's favor.
Federer says that he is happy to have broken the record, because Wimbledon is the tournament that means the most to him, and it feels as if he is finally coming full circle. The match took 4 hours and 16 minutes before Federer finally broke when Roddick missed on a forehand. Federer managed to jump up high in celebration, punching the air and whacking away at the neck with his racket. The two men hugged one another at the net before Federer received the trophy, which he proudly kissed, bringing it close to his chest. This is a truly momentous occasion for him.
Federer is only the third player to have won six different Wimbledon championships, and Pete Sampras and William Renshaw have both won seven. Sampras says that he considers Federer to be the greatest player ever. He's won more than a few majors now - He holds the record at 15 major titles - and he's got more up his sleeve, everyone can tell.
