In the first day of the Australian Open in Melbourne, Andy Roddick, who recently won the Brisbane International and took the first major win of the season, defeated the Netherlands' Thiemo de Bakker 6-1, 6-4, 6-4. A rain delay interrupted Roddick's match during the second set as the Hisense Arena's roof had to be closed for the play to continue. Roddick's next match will be against the winner of a match between Thomaz Bellucci from Brazil and Russia's Teimuraz Gabashvili, which started on Monday but was suspended and will finish on Tuesday. Bellucci was leading 6-3, 7-5, 4-6, 3-2, when the match was postponed.
Rain delays interrupted several matches throughout the day and a number weren't finished but postponed until Tuesday. Roddick also had a mishap during his first set when he tripped over the foot of a line judge who didn't manage to get out of his way, but neither Roddick nor the judge were injured.
Andy Murray, seeded number 5, defeated Kevin Anderson 6-1, 6-1, 6-2. Fernando Gonzalez, a Chilean player, defeated Belgium's Olivier Rochus. Ivan Ljubicic, seeded number 24, defeated the youngest player in the Open, Jason Kubler. Kubler is only 16-years-old and lost to Ljubicic 6-1, 6-2, 6-2. Rafael Nadal played during the night session against Aussie Peter Luczak, defeating him 7-6, 6-1 6-4.
Winner of the US Open, Juan Martin del Potro, defeated Michael Russell 6-4, 6-4, 3-6, 6-2. And in a reversal from September when Czech Radek Stepanek defeated Ivo Karlovic in a long battle at the Davis Cup semifinals, Karlovic emerged victorious yesterday. The 6' 10" Croatian player defeated Stepanek 2-6, 7-6, 6-4, 3-6, 6-4. It took 6 hours for Stepanek's victory at the David Cup, and almost 4 hours of play for Karlovic to win Monday. Because of the rain delays, however, the match spanned over 6 hours.
In an upset in the women's singles, Maria Sharapova lost to Maria Kirilenko 7-6, 3-6, 6-4. Sharapova is a top-ranked player from Russia who has held the number 1 spot in women's tennis, but is now out of play at the Open.
Kim Clijsters, also a former number 1 and US Open winner, easily defeated Canadian Valeria Tetreault 6-0, 6-4. Justine Henin, another former number 1 who lost the Brisbane International to Clijsters this year, defeated Kirsten Flipkens from Belgium with 6-4, 6-3.
The current number 1 player in women's tennis and last year's winner, Serena Williams, will play on Tuesday in Melbourne against Poland's Urszula Radwanksa. Roger Federer, ranked first, will play his first match of the Open on Tuesday against Igor Andreev from Russia. The winner of last year's Australian Open, Novak Djokovic, will play on Tuesday against Spain's Daniel Gimeno-Traver, who will be competing in the Open for the first time.
The weather for the Open as unseasonably cool at less than 70 degrees thanks to the breeze and the rain, causing delays on several courts and some postponements until Tuesday, when conditions are supposed to be about the same.
