French Open Recap

This past week in tennis gave players one more chance to tune-up their match skills before the French Open. Tennis starts like Fernando Verdasco, Robin Soderling, Caroline Wozniacki, Elena Dementieva, and Maria Sharapova saw action in the ATP Open de Nice Cote d’ Azur in Nice, the WTA Polsat Warsaw Open in Warsaw, and the WTA Internationanux de Strasbourg in Starasbourg.

The ATP Open de Nice Cote d’ Azur saw plenty of interesting tennis action with players including Baghdatis, Richard Gasquet, and Gael Mofils. Baghdatis got a scare in the first round, defeating L. Recouderc of France 6-4, 7-5. One-seed Robin Soderling did not fare as well, falling to Olivier Rochus of Germany in the second round, 6-2, 4-6, 4-6.

The top seeds of the Nice Open fell during the quarterfinals; Baghdatis fell to Leondardo Mayer 7-5, 3-6, 4-6, and Gael Monfils fell to Potito Starace 6-7, 6-2. Verdasco and Gasquet managed to stick through to the final. Richard Gasquet pulled out the tournament with a 6-3, 5-7, 7-6 win.

Meanwhile, in Stasbourg, Maria Sharapova resurrected her winning ways. Sharapova managed to win against Kristina Barrios of Germany with a 7-5, 6-2 pickup. Sharapova had a relatively simple draw in Strasbourg, defeating Regina Kulikova, Dia Evtimova, Julia Georges, and Anabel Medina Garrigues on her way to the final. Sharipova’s win was her 22nd career tour win.

In more WTA news, Alexandra Dulgheru of Romania, ranked number 37 in the world, picked up a win against Zheng Jie of China in a 6-3, 6-4 final. Melanie Oudin of the United States fell in the first round to Magdalena Rybarikova, 0-6, 2-6. Caroline Wozniacki had a bye in the first round, and pulled out a win against Polona Hercog in the second round, 2-6, 6-3, 6-4. Wozniacki fell to Zheng Jie in the Quarterfinals, however, retiring after losing the first set 6-3.

These various tournaments have all run into the French Open, which starts play on May 23rd.  On the men’s side, the top seeds are Roger Federer (1), Andy Murray (4), Novak Djokovic (3), and Rafael Nadal (2). Federer’s side of the bracket features Marion Cilic, Robin Soderling, and Gael Monfils, while Nadal’s features Lleytin Hewit and Fernando Verdasco.

The women’s top seeds include Serena Williams (1), Jelena Jankovic (4), Caroline Wozniacki (3), and Venus Williams (2). Serena William’s side of the bracket includes Mariar Sharapova , Sam Stosur, Justine Henin. Sister Venus Williams could face Elena Dementieva in later rounds, while Jankovic may have to deal with Bondarenko, Hantuchova, Wickmayer, Radwanska, and Zvonerava to reach the quarterfinals of the French Open.

This year’s French Open promises to be interesting and exciting; look for Andy Roddick to continue his string of early exists and the French Open and the possible finals of Serena Williams and Justin Henin, and Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal, to bring close and exciting games to the end of the Tournament.
