French Open: Roland Garros: Quarterfinals

The French Open concluded this week, providing plenty of ups and downs during the final week of play.

The Men’s side saw plenty of interesting twists and turns, with top players dropping and lower ranked players thriving. Robin Soderling, the 5 seed, toppled Roger Federer in the Quarterfinals, 3-6, 6-3, 7-5, 6-4. Thomas Berdych, the 15 seed, advanced the to semi finals, as did 22 seed Jurgen Melzer, who took out Novak Djokovic 3-6, 2-6, 6-2, 7-6, 6-4. The finals of the men side saw Robin Sodering in the finals once again, this time against Rafael Nadal. Soderling beat Nadal in the 2009 French Open. Rafael Nadal took the title, beating Soderling in straight sets, 6-4, 6-2, 6-4. With the win, Nadal takes the number one world ranking from Federer.

The Women’s side of the tournament saw plenty of upsets from the Quarterfinals on. Samantha Stosur, the 7th seed, took out Serena Williams, 6-2, 7-6, 8-6. Jelena Jankovic managed to hold on to her match against Shvedova, 7-5, 6-4. Francesca Schiavone, the surprising 17th ranked Italian, took her quarterfinal against 3 Seed Caroline Wozniacki 6-2, 6-3. Elena Dementieva held on to make it to the semi finals, beating Petrova 2-6, 6-2, 6-0.

Schiavone reached the finals after Dementieva retired after the first set. Samantha Stosur shocked Jelena Jankovic to reach the final, easily beating the 4 seed 6-1, 6-2. The final between the two was a relatively close match, with Francesca Schiavone taking the title over Samantha Stosur, 6-4, 7-6. This was the first Grand slam finals appearance for both women. Schiavone’s win is the first Grand Slam title of her career. It is also the first Grand Slam to be won by an Italian woman. Schiavone will debut in the top 10 in next week’s rankings, moving all the way up to 6th. This is Schiavone’s first top 10 ranking.

The Men’s doubles tournament was a complete toss up, as the early favorites were out of the round early. The 1 Seed Bryan Brothers of the United States lost in the early rounds of the tournament, leaving a wide-open field for the 2 seed team of Daniel Nestor (Canada) and Nenad Zimonjic (Serbia). The pair took the tournament over defending champions Leander Paes (India) and Lukas Dlouhy (Czech Republic), 7-5, 6-2. This was the third Grand Slam title for Nestor and Zimonjuic, as the group took the doubles title at Wimbledon in 2008 and 2009. Zimonjuic was also the Mixed Doubles champion, pairing with Katarina Srebotnik fo the win.

The Women’s doubles tournament saw the expected outcome, as the 1 seed Williams Sisters won the final with a simple 6-2, 6-3 win over Mixed Doubles Champion Katarina Srebotnik and Kveta Peschke. This is the fourth Doubles title in a row for the Williams sisters, who have won a total of 12 doubles championships.
