German Open Tennis Championship, Atlanta Tennis Championship, Nurnberger Gastein Ladies Tournament, Banka Koper Slovenia Open

This week in Tennis featured two Women’s Tournaments full of up-coming talent and improving veterans, and two Men’s Tournaments with new talent fighting against some recognized veterans.

The German Open Tennis Championship was held in Hamburg, Germany, featuring plenty of well-known players with some surprising results. Nikolay Davydenko was the top ranked player, losing in the third round to Andrey Golubev of Kazakstan, 6-4 6-4. Nicolas Almagro fell in the second round to Denis Istomin of Uzbekistan. Juan Carlos Ferrero faired somewhat better, losing in the fourth round to Jarkko Nieminen. The final featured a recognized, ranked player and a relatively unknown player with Jurgen Melzer and Andrey Golubev. Golubev came out on top, finishing off Melzer with a 6-3, 7-5 win.

The Atlanta Tennis Championship was the other major men’s tournament of the week, featuring players like Robby Ginepri, Mardy Fish, Andy Roddick, Lleyton Hewitt, John Isner, and Janko Tipsarevic. Robby Ginepri lost to Mardy Fish in the second found, losing 1-6, 5-7. Tipsarevic lost in the first round to Kevin Anderson, while Leyton Hewitt lost in the second round to Lukas Lacko. Andy Roddick made it all the way to the semi-finals, losing to Mardy Fish 607 (5), 3-6. Fish met John Isner in the final, making for an all-American final. Mardy Fish came out on top, taking out Isner in three sets (406, 6-4, 7-6 (4).

In Double’s News, Scott Lipsky and Rajeev Ram of the United States took out Rohan Bopanna and Kristof Vliegen to win the title. The notable team of Andy Roddick and Mardy Fish lost in the second round, 6-2 6-4.

The two Women’s tournaments this week did not feature many of the big names that are always expected to take the win. The Nurnberger Gastein Ladies Tournament was held in Austria, featuring players like Andrea Petkovic, and Timea Bacsinszky (the top two seeds of the tournament). The title was taken by Julia Goerges, who had to work to be able to win the title. Goerges was forced to play twice in one day after taking her semi-final match against Aliza Cornet. Goerges then defeated Timea Bacsinszky with a 6-1, 64 win.

The Banka Koper Slovenia Open was the other Women’s Tournament of the week, featuring players like Jelena Jankovic, Dominkia Cibulkova, and Petra Kvitova. Jankovic, seeded first, bowed out in the second round to Anastasiya Yakimova after retiring in the third set. The final of the tournament featured Anna Chakvetadze and Johanna Larson. Chakvetadze took the tournament with an easy 6-1, 6-2 win.
