The two Women’s tournaments this week did not feature many of the big names that are always expected to take the win. The Nurnberger Gastein Ladies Tournament was held in Austria, featuring players like Andrea Petkovic, and Timea Bacsinszky (the top two seeds of the tournament). The title was taken by Julia Goerges, who had to work to be able to win the title. Goerges was forced to play twice in one day after taking her semi-final match against Aliza Cornet. Goerges then defeated Timea Bacsinszky with a 6-1, 64 win.
The Banka Koper Slovenia Open was the other Women’s Tournament of the week, featuring players like Jelena Jankovic, Dominkia Cibulkova, and Petra Kvitova. Jankovic, seeded first, bowed out in the second round to Anastasiya Yakimova after retiring in the third set. The final of the tournament featured Anna Chakvetadze and Johanna Larson.
