Ground Strokes Guide pt 2

Continued from part one.

3 - Standing Sideways

Whenever it is possible to do so, you should play your ground strokes from a hitting position that has you standing sideways. You should be standing as if you are a write handed batter if you are hitting a forehand shot, or like a left handed batter if you are hitting a backhand shot. The sideways stance makes it possible for you to step toward the ball more easily as well as to shift your weight more succinctly forward before you begin to make your forward swing. In this way, you will be adding control of the direction and power to your shots effectively.

If you face the net while you are swinging, then your hitting arm will have a tendency to swing around you in a sideways direction rather than to go in the direction that you are hitting. When you are hitting a forehand shot it will swing to the left and it will swing to the right when you are hitting a backhand shot. You are going to have a tendency to hit the ball to the side if you are hitting from a net facing position, and therefore you will have a difficult time getting the ball to go where you want it to.

4 - Swing Like a Candy Cane

One simple and effective manner by which you can visualize the forehand swing that you are making is to think of it as swinging in the shape of a candy cane with a really long tail. Pretend that this candy cane is directly in front of where you are, and it is laying on its back with its tail pointing toward the net but slightly upward. As you begin to make your backswing from your hitting position, you should swing the racket up, then back, then down in the shape of the candy cane's hook, and then you should swing it forward and then just gradually upward to form the shape of the tail of the candy cane.

Your backswing is actually going to go around to the right just a bit, and your follow through will likely curve toward the left a bit. Make sure that you are concentrating on creating this candy cane shape with a long tail and your swing should improve. You can get the same effect by thinking of the letter J while swinging; just making sure that the J has a long tail as well. This will provide you with a slightly looping back swing and a long, slightly rising forward swing and a follow through as well.

5 - Shake Hands with a Giant

Following up with the previous idea, to make sure that you are following through properly you should be pretending that you are reaching just slightly to shake hands with a giant following your candy cane or J swing.
