Ground Strokes Guide pt 3

Continued from part two.

6 - Swing from Wall to Wall with your Forehand

You can get a good feel for what a good forehand is by practicing this swing while you are standing with your back against either a wall or a fence. You should be standing approximately one foot away from the wall and then you should swing your racket back until its tip is barely touching the wall. You are going to have to make sure that your wrist is being kept firm in order to keep the racket from banging back against the wall while you are swinging it back.

Once you have completed this backswing, you should step forward as if moving toward an imaginary ball, you should shift your weight in a forward direction and then you should make the necessary forward swing. You should be swinging the racket forward and then slightly up, stopping it as the tip barely begins to touch the wall on the left side. Here too you are going to have to make sure that your grip is form and your wrist is firm in order to make sure that the racket does not slam into the wall.

This type of wall to wall swinging practice is going to teach you all about controlling your racket during your swing as well as acquainting yourself with what a good, controlled and compact swing actually feels like.

7 - Swing Beginning at 7, Ending at 11

Visualizing the forehand swing that you are making over the numerals of a click face is going to help you learn how to make a good swing. You should be pretending that you are standing dead center on a huge flat clock painted on the ground on the court, and the number 12 is pointing toward the net and then the number 6 is pointing away from the net. You should be standing in a sideways manner so that you are facing the number 3, and then you should be swinging the racket until it is over the number 7. Then you should swing it forward, flattening your arc through to the number 3 area and then upward in the direction of the number 11, which means that the complete swing begins at 7 and ends at 11.

You should also be using the clock face concept when you are making a backhand swing. You should be facing the number 9 on the clock and then swing from the 5 to the 1 or from the 4 to the 2. Make sure that you are flattening the arm through in the direction of the number 9. To make sure that you remind yourself of the backhand swing, a good thing to remember is the word fortitude, or four to two.
