1 - Try to Hit Your Racquet On Edge.
In order to hit both accurately and consistently, you are going to need to be sensitive to your racquet's position during the swing. If during contact the racquet's hitting surface is slanted toward the sky in a more open position, then the ball is going to go up. If the hitting surface, on the other hand, is slanted toward the ground and in a closed position, then the ball is going to go down instead.
For most of your ground strokes you are going to find that the best position for your racquet face is perpendicular to the ground or as close to perpendicular as possible. One good way that you can learn the feel that your hand and arm positions should offer is to bounce the ball using the bottom edge of the racquet, behaving as if you were dribbling a basketball. This will give you a better feel for where your arm and your hand should be when your racquet is in this perpendicular position.
After you have created several successive dribbles or bounces, you should change the vertical swing into a horizontal swing, driving the ball in the direction of the net. You are probably going to hit a line drive that is typical of the more effective types of ground strokes. Once you have developed a feel for the perpendicular racquet, you can use this feel in order to hit better ground strokes while rallying and playing.
2 - Practice Your Angled Ground Strokes
During play, you are probably only occasionally hitting a ball that comes straight toward you from the place directly in front of you. Most often, you are going to be playing a ball that comes to you from slightly at an angle from either one of the court's corner or the other corner. Only occasionally, as well, are you going to hit the ball straight ahead. In other words, more often than not you are going to be hitting using an angle shot to either one corner of the court or the other.
You need to be able to practice these angled shots with a partner, and each of you should be trying to run the other player from one corner of the court to the other corner of the court. When your partner hits from one corner, you should aim your return, whether it be a forehand or a backhand, to the opposite court corner in return. You should ask your opponent to be doing the same thing so that you can practice hitting the balls that come to you from either corner of the court. By rallying in this fashion on a regular basis, you will learn about the subtle changes that exist for the wrist action and the timing necessary for making these unique angled shots.
