It’s Tennis Month!

The once number one player Tommy Haas, Mardy Fish and Ivan Ljubicic put in some great efforts in the Masters at Madrid this week.

Tommy Haas who had to qualify managed to pull it out against Ernests Gulbis in three exciting sets. Ivan Ljubicic who had to get a wildcard to make it into the draw settled the debate with Teimuraz Gabashvili. And Mardy Fish finished off Janko Tipsarevic.

Number two in the world Serena Williams who is dealing with a leg injury trailed Francesca Schiavone in a six to four loss. Williams is reported to be unhappy about the need to play while injured to avoid the fine that will be imposed by the WTA Tour if she sits out the games. She faces a $75,000 fine if she decided to skip Madrid which forced Williams to play on her injured leg.

This is the fourth loss for Williams since she played in the Miami final. Williams was the only upset in Madrid on this day as Elena Dementieva and Nadia Petrova moved into the third round. Caroline Wozniacki moved into the second round when Shahar Peer had a foot injury.

In other tennis news, ESPN plans to televise the first tennis tournament that is played under the brand new retractable roof on Wimbledon's Court. The husband and wife team Steffi Graf and Andre Agassi will play in the tournament. Kim Clijsters the once top ranked player will play in the televised event as well.

The new roof has been in the works for the last three years and there is also a new system for managing the air on the court. This will be introduced to a crowd of fifteen thousand people after the old roof was removed in 2006 and replaced with the new retractable roof. In 2007 the tournament was played without a roof and in 2008 there was a new overhang in place.

Look for Tim Henman to play in the tournament as well to the delight of fans who watched the player reach the semifinals and quarterfinals four times before he retired in 2007.

There will be a men's singles match, a women's singles match and mixed doubles. The matches will all be one set with a tie breaker.

In more tennis news this week, we have learned that tennis in China is a booming business while the rest of the world struggles. In fact, the China Open tennis tournament just received a $14.63 infusion of cash from Internet portal Sina.com. With all of this cash invested in tennis we should expect to see some great things from China.

Maria Sharapova plans to be on tour again next week. A shoulder injury has kept Sharapova out of the game recently but she will begin her first match in ten months at the tournament in Warsaw Poland on May 18th.

The news doesn't mention the French Open which begins on May 24th. It will be interesting to see if Sharapova makes the French Open after missing the last two Grand Slam, the Australian Open and the U.S. Open.
