Jeremy Chardy Wins Mercedes Cup

jeremychardyBetween the 13th of July and the 19th of July, the Mercedes Cup was held. This ATP World Tour event was held in Stuttgart Germany on a clay surface. Here are the results for Sunday, the 19th of July, 2009:

Singles Final Results: J Chardy of FRA defeated V Hnescu of ROU, 16 63 64.

Doubles Final Results:
F Cermak from CZE and M Mertinak from SVK defeated V Hanescu and H Tecau, both from ROU, 75 64.

Jeremy Chardy fought back hard in order to capture his very first ATP world tour title, allowing him to become the first Frenchman to take a win at the Mercedes Cup since Henri Leconte back in 1984. He managed to defeat the fourth seed, Victor Hanescu who hails from Romania in the Sunday final with 1 - 6, 6 - 3, 6 - 4. This was the third time that the pair met, and Chardy's second win.

Chardy, who managed to take two wins on Saturday to reach his second final in the ATP World Tour managed to collect €71,700 as well as 250 ATP Ranking Points. Hanescu on the other hand managed to pick up €37,700 along with 150 ATP Ranking Points. Chardy also received a Mercedes E350, which was the prize given by the title sponsors of the tournament event.

Chardy is moving to around No. 35 in the South African Airways ATP Rankings for 2009. He is one of a total of eight different Frenchmen who are in the Top 50. Hanesecu, who appeared in his third final for the ATP World Tour managed to clinch his first set within 31 minutes as a result of service breaks in both the second game and the sixth. This World Tour No. 33 player hit two different aces, winning 19 out of 29 of the service points.

The second set essentially went with serve until the sixth game was reached, which is when a service break was achieved by Chardy. He ran through this thirty-one minute set and won 20 out of 26 service points with four aces. He managed to maintain a strangle hold on the match, taking a startling 4-0 lead by the time the third set was reached, but then Hanescu managed to regain his composure, fighting back hard.

Hanescu found himself unable to convert two opportunities for break points in the eighth game, and Chardy managed to spring into life, allowing him to clinch what was his fourth service break, taking victory after an hour and forty nine minutes. The Frenchman managed to hit a total of ten aces, five double faults and five total break points out of eight in total.

- * Chardy managed to lose two sets 10 - 2 at the ATP World Tour 250 on clay courts, improving to 26 - 17 / 12 - 6 on clay for this year's ATP World Tour season.

- * Hanescu dropped down to 18 - 19 / 12 - 8 on clay this year, but his losses were especially highlighted by three different quarter final exits at Doha, Casablanca and Kitzbuhel, to Roddick, Ferrero and Garcia-Lopez respectively.
