This week in tennis featured the Legg Mason Tennis Classic in Washington D.C. This men’s tournament was joined by the two women’s tournaments of the Mercury Insurance Open (San Diego, California) and the e-Boks Sony Ericsson Open (Copenhagen, Denmark).
The Men’s Legg Mason Tennis Classic featured plenty of big names, including Andy Roddick, Tomas Berdych, Fernando Verdasco, John Isner, Sam Querry, Marin Cilic, Marcos Baghdatis, and David Nalbandian. Andy Roddick, the 2-seed, lost to Giles Simon of France in the third round. Other upsets included Wawrinka in the second round and Lleyton Hewitt in the second round. Sam Querry lost in the second round to Janko Tipsarevic, while Mardy Fish lost in the third round to Marion Cilic. Isner lost in the third round as well. Baghdatis upset Verdasco to make it to the semi finals, while 1 seed Berdych lost in the quarterfinals to Malisse. Marion Cilic lost in the semifinals to set up a finals match of Nalbandian and Baghdatis. Nalbandian managed to pull out the win in two sets, winning 6-2, 7-6(4). Nalbandian took home over $250,000 with the win.
The Women’s Mercury Insurance open featured some big names as well, with Jelena Jankovic taking the overall 1 seed. Other big players included Marion Bartoli Agnieszka Radwanska, Yanina Wickmayer, Svetlana Kuznetsova, Dinara Safina, Ana Ivanovic, Sam Stosur, Melanie Oudin, and Vera Zvnoereva. Zvonereva was ousted in the second round by Coco Vandeweghe, while Stosur lost in the third round to Flavia Pannetta. Jankovic lost in the second round as well, overtaken in three sets by Alisa Kleybanova of Russia. Radwanska beat out Hantuchova to make it to the finals, while Kuznetsova took out Pannetta to do the same. Kuznetsova took home the win, beating out Radwanska in a 6-4, 6-7(7), 6-3 thriller.
The Women’s e-Boks Sony Ericsson open was the inaugural tournament, bringing in plenty of new players and a few well known players. The 1 seed for the tournament was Caroline Wozniacki, and the 2 seed was Li Na. Li made it semi-finals, losing to Klara Zakopalova, the 7 seed from the Czech Republic. Wozniacki, on the other hand, made it to the finals, beating out Anna Chakvetadze of Russia in the semi-finals. Wozniacki faced Zakopolova in the finals, beating her in two sets (6-2, 7-6(5)).
The Women will meet in Cincinnati next week for the Western & Southern Financial Group Women’s Open, featuring Jelena Jankovic, Flavia Pannetta, Vera Zvonereva, Kim Clijsters, Ana Ivanovic and Francesca Schiavone. The Men will meet at the Roger’s Cup in Toronto, Canada. This tournament features many of the top seeds in the tournament, including Rafael Nadal, Roger Federer, Novak Djokovic, Andy Murray, Robin Soderling, Andy Roddick, Nikolay Davydenko, and Fernando Verdasco.
