Maria Yuryevna Sharapova was born on April 19 in 1987 and is a Russian professional tennis player. Maria Sharapova was previously a World No. 1 ranked tennis player, though as of October 27, 2008 she was ranked World No. 6 according to the Women's Tennis Association. In her career, Sharapova has taken three Grand Slam singles wins, and in 2004 she beat Serena Williams in the final of the Wimbledon championships at the age of 17. Since then, she has defeated Justine Henin in the final of the 2006 US Open to take the win, as well as defeating Ana Ivanovic in the 2008 Australian Open to take the win. Sharapova has also represented Russia in the Fed Cup, although there is some controversy surrounding her appearances. She has also been featured in numerous modeling assignments, including a feature in the Sports Illustrated Magazine. In July of 2008, Maria Sharapova was named the highest paid female athlete as a result of her success both on the court and off.
Where She Is Now -
During the French Open, Maria Sharapova sustained an injury to her shoulder that created problems in a number of her subsequent matches. During a match at the Tier I Rogers Cup, she committed 17 different double faults, and twice needed to stop to seek treatment for her shoulder. In order to prevent her injury from becoming worse she withdrew from the tournament. An MRI scan revealed that she had a torn rotator cuff, which had been affecting her since April. This injury went on to prevent her from playing further in 2008, causing her to miss the US Open and the Beijing 2008 Olympics before she officially announced that she would be taking the rest of the year off in order to heal.
