These tips should help you improve your tennis game in various ways. Combine them, or try different tips one at a time until you're happy with the results.
1 - Learn how to vary the length when you make a backswing.
You need o learn how to tailor the length of your individual backswing approach to the specific needs of the game situation. You should be using a long and full swing when you are hitting a ball that is coming at you slowly, because the ball is not going to have a lot of speed on it - You are going to want to be able to add speed to the return of the ball, then you need to generate a good racket speed through the use of a long and full swing.
You should be using a short and compact backswing in order to return a ball that is moving more quickly. You will not need to add any speed to this ball, but you are going to need to be able to time it much more accurately and to hit it much more solidly. A backswing that is short and concise is going to make the timing much easier than a much longer swing.
You should also be using a short swing when you are dealing with low shots in the midcourt, especially when you have no other choice available but to hit the ball easy and up for the purpose of scrambling shots any time you are simply trying to get the ball back into play.
2 - Strive to move away from the ball while in the backcourt.
When you pare playing and you are in the backcourt during a singles match, you should seldom ever be right in the center of the court or directly behind the court's center mark. The only time that you should ever be there is in instances where your opponent is hitting from the very middle of the court. During all other situations you are going to want to be slightly away from the center, away from whatever side that the ball is currently on.
If you have managed to force your opponent to hit the ball from his forehand corner, then you should be moving a little to the right of the center mark while awaiting the shot. If you have forced your opponent to hit from the backhand corner of the court, then you should move slightly to the left of the center mark for the best results.
Moving away from the center in this way, by moving away from whichever side the ball is on, you are going to be putting yourself in a good position to cover two angles, cross court shots and down the line shots made by your opponent. If you move to a centered position on the other hand then you would be dealing with difficulties getting to the cross court shot.
