Preview for the ATP Cincinnati Masters, to be held in Mason Ohio

Montreal TennisThe U.S. Open tennis series is about to kick off week five in Cincinnati, sending the tour to another humid and hot excursion through hard clay courts throughout North America. Now that Montreal is in the books, the ATP boys are going to have to take on the challenge of dealing with a back to back effort on grueling asphalt courts. Montreal has certainly made way for some unique and interesting story lines from Cincinnati.

Is Andy Murray going to be able to continue with his strangle hold on the hard courts? Is Juan Martin del Potro going to have the necessary physical stamina so that he can ride his form through to the end of the summer? Is Roger Federer going to bounce back from the inexplicable loss that he took to Jo-Wilfried Tsonga? Is Rafael Nadal going to be able to improve upon the tentative playing style that he took in Canada?

Finally, are the muggy temperatures of Mason Ohio going to eclipse the scorching fire experienced in Montreal? Lets hope not.

The proposition of winning a back to back title during the hard court season this summer has been a historically daunting task. Similar in nature to the Miami and Indian Wells combo, sustaining your level for a period of two weeks across asphalt tennis courts has been a true commitment to the game of tennis of the highest possible degree.

You are seldom going to find players that have not been great closers winning both in Canada as well as Cincinnati in Ohio. In fact, only three players have held the honor of winning these events in consecutive weeks, and these players are Andre Agassi in 1995, Patrick Rafter in 1998 and then most recently, Andy Roddick during 2003. Players need to be not only in excellent shape but also willing to do what it takes to grind hard so that they can win during these summer months. The formula to success on the hard courts truly resides in perseverance and proper hydration.

The singles draw during the Cincinnati tournament is going to feature a field of 56 men. There are going to be 16 seeded players all told, and additionally the top 8 seeds are going to receive a first round buy. The prize for the winner this week is going to be a total sum of $443,500, and more importantly, 1,000 additional ATP World Tour points are going to be rewarded for the tournament champion.

The United States Open tournament contenders are continuing to size up all of their opponents during this week while they work on simultaneously refining their own personal skill sets. There are bound to be some truly exciting first round matches this upcoming week.
