The Serbia Open came down to an all-American finals round with John Isner going up against Sam Querrey, after the #2 player in the world and defending champion Novak Djokovic left during the quarter-finals semi-finals because of what he says were allergy-related breathing problems. The Djokovic family actually organizes the Serbian Open each year, and he had a decisive victory on these courts last year, but allergies kept him from being able to finish. That left 2 US players to meet in the finals. Querrey defeated Isner 3-6, 7-6 (4), 6-4 on Sunday to win the title. Isner was actually seeded second for the event, while Querrey was seeded third.
At one point Isner had a match point in set 2 during his serve, but wasted it and lost his 5-3 lead as Querrey converted the point. Querrey converted another break point, his 4th, during the 3rd set. In the 9th game, he converted it and then served the rest of a great match to manage his 4th ATP title. This also marks his first ever win on a clay court.
Emotions ran high during the match, with Isner actually throwing down his racket after hitting the ball into the net for the last point of the match. Querrey and Isner are friends off the court but tough competitors on it, and Querrey said it wasn't easy to play against Isner in the tournament. He congratulated his friend on a good week of play in Belgrade.
This is the first time 2 Americans have made the finals in a clay court tournament in almost 20 years. The last time was at the French Open in 1991 when it came down to Andre Agassi and Jim Courier, who defeated Agassi for the title. This is the second time Querrey has defeated his friend this year to take home a title. He beat Isner in February in Memphis to win the championship. Isner says of the match that he had his chances but that Querrey deserved to win. He also said that they'd meet again here next year.
The top seed for this competition, Djokovic, retired while playing Filip Krajinovic in the quarterfinals. He lost the first set 6-4 on Friday to his fellow Serbian player and then withdrew. It was Krajinovic's first appearance in any ATP tour semifinals match. Querrey defeated 18-year-old Krajinovic in only 51 minutes.
Isner defeated France's Richard Gasquet and Swiss Stanislas Wawrinka, seeded fourth for the event, to reach the finals. This is the 4th time in his career that Isner has made it to an ATP final. This was his first ever clay final.
Though this atmosphere and the clay courts are where Djokovic typically commands matches and defeats other players very easily, particularly those who don't flourish on clay, he claims that his allergies just made breathing too difficult this weekend. He also announced on Saturday that he'll withdraw from the Madrid Open scheduled for next week because of those same breathing problems.
