Jelena Jankovic has managed to ensure her place, and she did this when her only remaining rival for that final place, Vera Zvonareva, was defeated during the Kremlin Cup's second round just yesterday.

The Sony Ericsson Championships tournament is slated to be kept at the Khalifa International Tennis Complex between the dates of October 27 and November 1 of 2009.

She had been the world no. 1 at the end of the year in 2008 as well as the first player in the entire history of the WTA tour to have achieved this without managing to win a Grand Slam title. Right now she is sitting at a World no. 9 ranking.

Jelena Jankovic managed to win her 10th title in the singles tour playing at Marbella when she defeated Suarez Navarro during the finals. In August she managed to win an eleventh tour sings title while playing in Cincinnati. This is her third ever qualification for this championships. She previously competed in the year 2007 during the round robin stage and then last year she played in the Doha 2008 Sony Ericsson Championships. She is one of three players that have held the No. 1 world ranking this year on the tour.
