Race for Sony Ericsson Championships Continues

Sony Ericsson ChampionshipDoha 2009 has finally come to an end, and Jelena Jankovic has qualified, becoming the eighth and the final player to be qualifying for this championship during the singles competition.

Jelena Jankovic is going to be joining Venus Williams, Victoria Azarenka, Elena Dementieva, Caroline Wozniacki, Svetlana Kuznetsova, Serena Williams and Dinara Safina during the singles competitions.

The doubles competition is going to feature Cara Black, who will be playing with Liezel Huber, Serena Williams, who will be playing with Venus Williams, Maria José Martínez Sánchez, who will be playing with Llagostera Vives and Samantha Stosur, who will be playing with Rennae Stubbs.

Vera Zvonareva from Russia and Agnieszka Radwanska from Poland have both been named as alternates for singles, and so they are also going to be traveling to Doha as well.

Jelena Jankovic has managed to ensure her place, and she did this when her only remaining rival for that final place, Vera Zvonareva, was defeated during the Kremlin Cup's second round just yesterday.

The Sony Ericsson Championships tournament is slated to be kept at the Khalifa International Tennis Complex between the dates of October 27 and November 1 of 2009.

The players are going to be competing for a much coveted title with the Sony Ericsson Championships tournament as well as a share of the prize money, which totals a sum of $4.45 million dollars.

Jelena Jankovic says that she is really happy for having made it to this tournament for the third time so far in her career. She says that she is really looking forward go going back to Doha and participating in some truly great matches.

For a period of seventeen consecutive weeks, Jelena Jankovic managed to be ranked No. 1 in the world, until she was finally overtaken on February 2 of 2009 by Serena Williams. She had been the world no. 1 at the end of the year in 2008 as well as the first player in the entire history of the WTA tour to have achieved this without managing to win a Grand Slam title. Right now she is sitting at a World no. 9 ranking.

Jelena Jankovic managed to win her 10th title in the singles tour playing at Marbella when she defeated Suarez Navarro during the finals. In August she managed to win an eleventh tour sings title while playing in Cincinnati. This is her third ever qualification for this championships. She previously competed in the year 2007 during the round robin stage and then last year she played in the Doha 2008 Sony Ericsson Championships. She is one of three players that have held the No. 1 world ranking this year on the tour.
