The next few rounds have seen plenty of heartbreak, as top seeds began to falter. Andy Roddick fell in the third round, continuing his woes at the clay courts of the French Open. Roddick lost to Teimuraz Gabashvili of Russia, a qualifier ranked 114th in the world. Gabashvili made quick work of Roddick, beating him 6-4, 6-4, 6-2.
One of the main French hopes in the Men’s draw, Gael Monfils, fell to Fabio Fognini in the second round. Plagued by controversy, Monfils lost on the second day of play 6-2, 6-4, 5-7, 4-6, 7-9. The players continued play well into the night at the French Open with no court lights available before the match was finally called for darkness.
Andy Murray, the hope the Great Britain, lost to Berdych relatively quickly with a 4-6, 5-7, 3-6 loss. The other main French hope, Tsonga, retired against Youzhny after the first set, 2-6.
Major players Federer, Nadal, and Djokovic have all sailed through the draw and are looking forward to the competitive matchups of the second week. The Quarterfinals will include matchups of Federer and Soderling, Berdych and Youzhny, and Djokovic and Melzer. Nadal will play against the winner of the Verdasco/Almagro match.
Top Women’s seeds Serena Williams, Venus Williams, and Jelena Jankovic all managed to march through the first few rounds. Maria Sharapova continued to impress with her 12th seed, losing to Justine Henin in the third round. Henin lost in the fourth round to Sam Stosur.
Venus Williams saw her French Open end early in the fourth round as well, losing to Nadia Petrova 6-4, 6-3. Serena Williams made her way to the Quarterfinals and will face Sam Stosur. Caroline Wozniacki has also made it to the Quarterfinals, as has Elena Dementieva. Jelena Jankovic looks to be in the Quarterfinals as she faces Daniela Hantuchova in the fourth round.
The Double’s Tournament at the French Open has also seen its fair share of ups and downs. The American Duo of the Bryan brothers fell in the early rounds at the French Open, losing to an unseeded Brazilian team in two sets. The William’s sisters continue to live up to their number 1 ranking, however, making it through to the Quarterfinals. Action will continue to heat up as the singles and doubles tournaments press on.
