Review: Wimbledon - The Official History of the Championships by John Barrett

The Wimbledon championships began their life all the way back in 1877. They were simply a summer past time back then, but now they are a worldwide covered two week championship in June that are held every year. This book was endorsed by the England Club, and chronicles the development of the Wimbledon championship tournament on a decade by decade basis, setting the rich history of this championship tournament against other world events.

The author of this book, John Barrett, describes in great detail all of the excellent players that have appeared through the years in the Wimbledon championships, and goes on to discuss some of the controversies that have ranged through the years, including but not limited to Suzanne Lenglen's dramatic exit in 1926, along with the scandalous reaction to Gussie Moran's lace panties in 1949. He also touches on many of the truly great moments that have been experienced throughout the years, such as the duels existing between McEnroe and Borg, and the seven singles titles won by Pete Sampras. He looks at each decade one by one with photographs and biographies of each male and female singles champion complete with their singles results for the 114 total year history of the Wimbledon championships contained in an easy to maneuver statistics chapter. This book is jam packed with more than 400 photos, and serves as a true portrait of an occasion that has become an institution as well as an international sporting event.

This unique and colorful book is filled to the brim with 480 photos and all of the illustration, statistics, facts and background information that you could ever hope to find regarding this 114-year tradition, the Wimbledon championship tournament. Wimbledon has been around since 1877, and is regarded today as one of the most vital and influential tennis tournaments that is still active, even 114 years later. John Barrett, a tennis journalist and former captain of the Davis Cup does a marvelous job chronicling this lengthy history of the tournament on a decade by decade basis, sharing world events in the process to provide a completely new perspective of the event. He takes the time to talk about all of the incredible events that have occurred in this span of time, including the controversies, the duels, the rivalries, and he even looks at all of the greatest players, presenting bios, statistics and photographs for all of the champions through the years.

If you are interested in the Wimbledon tournament and want to learn everything that there is to know about this long standing tradition for tennis, then this book is absolutely worth picking up. It is welcomed addition to any library, and makes an excellent coffee table book as well.
