Roddick Selects Stefanki as 2009 Season Coach

roddickThe former world no. 1 tennis player, Andy Roddick, recently announced that he would be working with a renowned coach by the name of Larry Stefanki beginning next season. The announcement was initially delivered on Andy Roddick's personal website, which is viewable from http://www.andyroddick.com. On his website, Andy Roddick, a former U.S. Open champion, stated that he and Stefanki would be working together and that he and Stefanki would be using the off season in order to prepare well for the upcoming tennis season.

The current year of tennis marked Roddick's lowest ranking season so far on the ATP Tour since he finished at No. 1 in the world in 2003. Winding up at No. 8 instead, the American went 49 - 18 in 2008, taking three titles and no Grand Slam victories this year. His season has certainly been bothered by a number of issues with his shoulder, forcing him to skip certain tournament matches including the all important French Open.

Losing his World No. 1 to his long time rival, Rafael Nadal, was a big deal for Andy Roddick, especially considering how epic their tennis battles had been in recent years. His tennis season this year around simply was not as prosperous as Andy had hoped, which is likely what has led him to seek coaching from a new source for the following tennis season.

At the season ending tournament, the Tennis Masters Cup which was held in Shanghai in China, Roddick was unfortunately forced to withdraw just about half way into the tournament because he was dealing with an unexpected ankle injury that prevented him from continuing.

With a brand new coach, Roddick is essentially banking on improving his performance following sagging fortunes in 2008 which limited him to only three titles, which were obtained in San Jose, Dubai and in Beijing during the 2008 Olympics. Stefanki who is taking over after Jimmy Connors resigned from his coaching post, is not new to the world of coaching, especially not when it comes to big names in the sport.

Stefanki is a former player himself, who has enjoyed the game for many years. He has worked with John McEnroe, Yevgeny Kafelnikov, Tim Henman, Marcelo Rios and Fernando Gonzalez in his history of coaching so far, so is obviously well equipped to handle Andy Roddick's career.

Andy Roddick is no stranger to working with numerous coaches, either. Before he decided to begin working with Stefanki, Roddick has received coaching work from his brother John, Brad Gilbert and Dean Goldfine as well.

Andy Roddick is hoping to start strong when the 2009 tennis season begins, which is why he is adopting a new training regimen and working with a completely new coach at the end of the 2008 season.
