Federer managed to reach all the way to the finals of the French Open by taking a five set victory over his opponent, Juan Martin del Potro. Federer learned in the process that it is not all about who wants it the most that dictates who will win. Federer clearly wanted it the most, and that intense wanting nearly destroyed him during the match. He was in complete and utter disarray at times. His desire was so intense that his playing style was affected, and he was no longer the cool, certain, accurate and tactical player that we have grown to know and love.
It was also this intense wanting that made him more vulnerable than ever. Everything he wanted was almost allowed to be simply plucked from his grasp by Juan Martin del Potro, who has been touted as the perfect opponent for the likes of Federer. Juan Martin del Potro is a towering man, standing at 6 feet and 6 inches tall, and he nearly came close to completely blasting Roger Federer into tiny pieces all over the court during the French Open semi-finals.
Not only was Federer trailing for a while there, but he was also playing uncharacteristically poor during the semi-finals of the French Open, indicating to many of his fans that he may finally have reached the ending of his Paris campaign. Many also began to worry that this would be the career ender, forcing him to lose his regard as the greatest tennis champion that we have ever known. Yet somehow through what seemed to be a disastrous victory on the part of Juan Martin del Potro, Roger Federer managed to turn things around right at the end, winning the match with 3 - 6, 7 - 6, 2 - 6, 6 - 1, 6 - 4.
The problem that Federer ran into here was that both players were looking for completely different things. All that Juan Martin del Potro wanted was a chance to place in the final so that he could have a chance to finally take a grand-slam title. Federer, on the other hand, wanted something more. He is trying hard to become a tennis great like Andre Agassi and Pete Sampras, or perhaps both men combined. He is looking for a fourteenth grand-slam title win, the same number of wins that Sampras claimed.
Federer, so far, seems to be having a relatively dreadful tournament. The only thing that is really saving him is the fact that he is continuing to win. He has been unable to really assert any of his dominance or authority over his opponents however. His next match is going up against Robin Soderling, a Swedish player that is slated to give him quite a show. Time will be the judge of whether or not Federer can pick himself up in this tournament and take the win he has been so desperately seeking.
