Rogers Cup and Western & Southern Financial Group Women’s Open

This week in Tennis featured one major tournament for the men and one major tournament for the women. The Men played in the Canadian Open, also known as the Rogers Cup, in Toronto, Canada. The Women played in the Western & Southern Financial Group Women’s Open, Held in Cincinnati, Ohio.

With the U.S. Open a short two weeks away, plenty of big names were on hand for the action. The first seed in the Tournament was Jelena Jankovic, followed by Caroline Wozniacki (2), Elena Dementieva (3), and Kim Clijsters (4). Other major players included Victoria Azarenka, Aravane Reazai, Dinara Safina, Vera Zvonereva, Flavia Pannetta, Yanina Wickmayer, Li Na, and Agnieszka Radwanska.

Jelena Jankovic made it to the third round, losing to Akgul Amanmuradova of Uzbekistan, 6-2, 6-0. Zvonereva suffered a similar fate in the third round, losing to Maria Kirlenko of Russia 7-5, 2-6, 7-6(2). Wozniacki also lost in the third round, ousted by Marion Bartoli. Maria Sharapova took over Bartoli in the fourth round, making it to the final after beating out Pavlyuchenkova in the semi-finals 64, 3-6, 6-2. Kim Clijsters also made it to the finals, beating Flavia Pannetta in the quarterfinals and Ana Ivanovic in the semi-finals. Clijsters eventually went on to beat Sharapova in a well-fought match, coming back to win the tournament 2-6, 7-6(4), 6-2. Clijsters took home over $350,000 with the win.

The same type of tournament was found in Canada for the men, as plenty of large names came out to tune-up before the U.S. Open. Some of the big names in the tournament included Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic, Roger Federer, Andy Murray, Fernando Verdasco, Robin Soderling, and Nikolay Davydenko. The tournament also included Sam Querrey, Marion Cilic, Tommy Robredo, and Richard Gasquet.

Verdasco, the 9 seed, lost in the second round to Chardy of France 6-7(7), 7-6(5), 6-2. Davydenko lost in the third round to Chardy, with Chardy pulling out a 6-3, 6-2 win. Chardy eventually lost to Djokovic in the quarterfinals, 6-2, 6-3. Federer bested Djokovic in the semifinals, taking out Chela, Llodra, and Berdych along the way. Robin Soderling, the 5 seed, was ousted by David Nalbandian in the third round. Andy Murray managed to Oust Nadal in the semi-final to make his way to the final of the tournament. Nadal took out Wawrinka, Anderson, and Kohlschreiber to make it to that final.

Andy Murray and Roger Federer met in the final, with Murray taking the win in impressive fashion, winning 7-5, 7-5. This tournament was an impressive wine for Murray, as he beat both Federer and Nadal in the same tournament, taking both in two sets.
