Murray managed to win a fourth ATP World Tour Masters title. He was the third seed, and rallied past Juan Martin del Potro, the sixth seed, with 6 - 7 (4), 7 - 6 (3), 6 - 1 in order to claim his fourth title with the World Tour Masters 1000 this past Sunday during the Rogers Cup in Montreal in Canada. Murray is now the first British player ever to have captured this title in the history of the tournament.
Murray, following his effort during the Montreal tournament, is going to move up into the World no. 2 spot. He earned $443,500 as well as 1000 ranking points for the South African Airways 2009. This further boosted his chance of qualifying for the elite Barclays finals for the ATP World Tour which is going to be held during November in the O2 which is located in London. He is also moving up into the No. 3 spot in the bonus challenge standings for the Olympus US Open Series, trailing del Potro who is at No. 1 by a total of 40 points, and trailing Querrey who is at No. 2. by a total of 15 points.
This 22 year old Scottish player has become the first player to have posted 50 match wins in this season, with a score of 50 to 7. He also recently joined Rafael Nadal as a co-title leader after having lifted his fifth trophy in the ATP World Tour in 2009. He also took a title at the ATP's World Tour Masters 1000 that was held in Miami, having defeated Djokovic, and another in on Doha, the Queen's Club and Rotterdam. This is the second year consecutively that Murray has managed to take five titles in the ATP World Tour and his lifetime score in finals is currently 13 and 6 with 4 to 1 in the ATP World Tour Masters.
Murray managed to wear down the Argentine, who is 20 years old, during the third set. The first two sets were lengthy at two hours and seventeen minutes, but then the Scot was able to run away with the third set in a quick 27 minutes by limiting his opponent to only nine points. Murray who has 4 to 1 in lifetime score against Del Potro managed to fire 16 aces during the match, winning 67 % of second serve points in comparison to the 11 aces and 48 % from Del Potro.
