Querry has managed to win a second title on the ATP Tour, and now he is saying that he also plans to come back next year for the same tournament. At least next year during the LA Tennis Open's draw, the defending champion is going to be present. Sam Querrey is a rising star, at only 21 years old, who is playing in his third final in as many weeks. Luckily, this time he decided to do something completely differently: He won.
In both Newport, Rhode Island and Indianapolis, Indiana, he was a runner up. Then he played in front of an enthusiastic bunch of his old buddies from high school, referring to themselves as "The Samurai", and in front of his high school chums, Querrey managed to spend Sunday wiping the floor with Carsten Ball for 6 - 4, 3 - 6, 6 - 1.
Sam Querrey managed to walk away with $100,000 and a second overall ATP tour title. This new ranking is his career best so far, as he now sits at 26th in the world. Today he also admitted that he is planning to return against next year, which is good news for the Los Angeles Tennis Open. After all, this year the event suffered an approximate 8-percet drop in attendance. Its defending champion and its runner up, Juan Martin Del Potro from Argentina and Andy Roddick respectively were both absent this year as well.
Instead the final featured Ball, ranked as No. 205 in the world and Querrey when it was played in front of 6,177 at the LA Tennis Center located at UCLA. Ball had never won a ATP level singles match before he played this week, and Querrey is quickly making a name for himself as being one of the next great American tennis pros, though he has never gone past a Grand Slam tournament's fourth round.
Querrey did admit that the quality of the tennis played on Sunday was not the highest level of play. He was unable to give a definitive answer when asked whether or not he was ready to win the upcoming US Open championship tournament. Ball is a left-handed player that has been nearly exclusively reared in Newport Beach, and the two players were matched well though their head to head rounds were not as rousing as play would have been, had Roddick showed for the tournament.
Querrey managed to overcome his obvious disappointment when he lost the second set of the match. He gave himself quite an angry lecture while he was sitting below an umbrella on a chair after he lost it. Querrey was a runner up during the Indianapolis tournament last week, but he brought a better game this week, impressing his friends, who came with bare chests and the letters S, A, M, U, R, A, I printed across their bodies in paint. Querrey's over all goal is to reach one of the top 32 US Open seeded players, a spot that he has nearly been guaranteed with this recent win.
