Selecting a Tennis Racquet
June 17th, 2010 | Racket, Tennis
Choosing the right tennis racquet is actually capable of improving and enhancing the game of the player. Unfortunately, the task of selecting the right tennis racquet is not always as simple as it may seem. Manufacturers have actually made the entire process difficult because each individual manufacturer has a completely unique method for determining what your tennis playing needs are. There are such a wide variety of different tennis racquets to choose from at this point that the decision making process can be tedious. It really depends on how much money you want to spend, but there are other guidelines that you need to consider, many of which pertain to the head size of your racquet, the grip size of your racquet, and also the amount of flex provided by your racquet.
Head Size of Your Racquet
The larger that the head size is for your racquet, the more power you will be provided with. Additionally, a larger racquet head size means a larger sweet spot which is why beginners as well as intermediate players often prefer to work with a racquet with a larger head size. Additionally, thicker frames are also capable of generating more power as well. Smaller head sizes on racquets on the other hand are capable of providing less power, but significantly more control. This tends to be what intermediate players are looking for because they can produce their own power but need help gaining the necessary control over the ball and the racquet. Midsized hitting areas for a racquet tend to be between 85 and 95 square inches. Mid plus sized racquets are 95 inches to 105 inches squared, and oversized racquets are 105 square inches or larger.
Grip Size of Your Racquet
Choosing the right grip size for your racquet is absolutely essential. If you choose a grip size that is too large, you will have difficulty controlling hard shots with any accuracy at all. If on the other hand your grip size is too small, then you will have difficulty getting the necessary amount of spin. The easiest way for you to know what the proper grip size is for your racquet is to speak to a sporting goods store employee to help you choose the right grip.
Flex of Your Racquet
The flex in your racquet, or the amount of stiffness, is described as the amount of resistance to bending that the racquet exhibits when hitting the ball. The more flexible the racquet is, the better control it will provide over the ball. Unfortunately, once again, more control means less power. A racquet that is less stiff will give players longer swings, and these are ideal for players that are capable of producing their own power but need more control.
You also want to consider the length as well as the weight for your racquet. The standard racquet length is twenty seven inches though there are also extra long racquets available for purchase.
