One of the most competitive divisions in the Men's and Women's Open Singles in Staten Island continued its constant slugfest this past Saturday at the Staten Island Community Tennis Center, located in Willowbrook. It involved Erik Manske winning a three set battle against Anton Vilinskiy. Frank Italiano also went on to out hit Pete Oh in a match of three sets. Patrick Thomas, who was bounced out of the main draw managed to outlast Adam Gleichenhaus with a three set in the other quarterfinals action, 7 - 6, 9 - 7 and 6 - 2.
After the battle for the first set, Thomas jumped out to claim a 3 - 1 second set lead after a number of strong forehand winners managed to paint the sidelines. But this former Staten Island Academy player did not regroup again until after he played a sloppy fifth set. He managed to win four straight points in the sixth round, then claimed the seventh through the use of solid overheads. He managed to win the double deuce final game by rallying from 0 - 40.
