If you have determined that the cause of your tennis elbow pain is that you have poor technique when swinging your tennis racquet, then you need to keep in mind that bad habits from a lifetime of playing are not going to be easy to remove. It is going to require a lot of persistence and a lot of determination for you to overcome bad form and bad playing habits. But there is definitely no stronger medication for improving your techniques on the court than knowing that if you do not improve, you may be dealing with a lifetime of pain from tennis elbow.
If you have been given the all clear to begin playing again by your doctor or by your physical therapist, then it is essential that you do absolutely everything that you possibly can in order to alleviate any kind of discomfort that you may be feeling. It is important that you find a way to incorporate a good stretching routine into your normal warming up routine. Flexing the wrist in the direction of the palm while you keep your elbow straightened is definitely a good stretch that you should be doing. It is a good idea for you to wear an elbow brace or an elbow sleeve, because when your muscles are warm, they are going to be capable of stretching more and therefore will be far less prone to sustaining injuries.
Another consideration to make when it comes to diagnosing the problem behind tennis elbow is that the problem may actually be your equipment. If the problem is not somewhere in your technique, then the odds are that it has something to do with the equipment that you are using. Answer the following questions. If you answer yes to any of the following questions, then your equipment may actually be to blame for your unfortunate discomfort.
- Are you using a racquet that is light, but is head heavy?
- Are you using a racquet that has a very small grip?
- Are you using a racquet that has a very large grip?
- Are you using a racquet that seems to be exceptionally stiff?
- Are you using a racquet that seems to be hard and really unforgiving in the strings?
- Are you using a racquet that has a sweet spot that is relatively spot?
- Are you using a racquet without a vibration dampener?
- Are you using heavy balls?
If you ended up answering yes to any of the questions mentioned above, or even just one of them, then it could be possible that you are hurting yourself by using the wrong equipment, and then the solution would be to change your equipment in order to give yourself a tremendous benefit.
