Here is a continuation of the tennis glossary of terms that we have been working on for some time now.
Sidespin - Sidespin is imparted to a ball by drawing the strings of the racket along the ball horizontally as the ball makes contact, this creates a spin around the vertical axis of the ball.
Singles - A singles match is a played between two players.
Singles Court - A singles match is played on a court that is 27 feet wide.
Singles Sideline - The singles sideline is one of the two lines defining the side boundaries of a singles court.
Slice - A slice refers to a shot combining both backspin and sidespin, or as a verb, to refer to the action of making that shot.
Smash - A smash is a shot that is hit with great force down into the opponent's court using an overhead swing.
Snap Volley - A snap volley uses wrist motion as the swing connects to impart extra speed to the volley.
Straight Sets - A straight set is a term for a match where all sets were won by one player.
Strings - The strings of a tennis racket are a mesh of interlaced strings of either gut or synthetic material that form the racket's hitting surface.
Stroke - This means to swing at the ball; it is another name for a shot.
Sudden Death - Sudden death is a tie-breaking method with set length. 9 point and 13 point tie breakers are the most commonly used. In the 9 point tie breaker the winner is the first player to score 5 points, and the 13 point tie-breaker is won by the player to first score 7 points.
Sweet Spot - The sweet spot is a spot near the center of the racket that provides the best hitting surface.
T - The T is the point in the midcourt area with the center service line meets the service line.
Take the Net - Taking the net is a way to better hit volleys into the opponent's side of the court by moving towards the net into the forecourt area.
Tandem - Tandem is a formation for doubles play which has the partners divide responsibility for the court by the center service line as opposed to using the up and back formation.
Tape - Usually made of white canvas or a synthetic material, the tape is the 2 inch to 2 and a half inch band covering the top of the net.
Team Tennis - Team tennis is a competition between teams of players. This competition involves matches of both singles and doubles and the winner is the team that has won the most games.
Tennis Ball - This is the ball that is used in the game of tennis, and it is a hollow and rubber sphere that is between 2 and a half and 2 and five eighths inches in its diameter, and it weighs between 2 ounces and 2 and 1/16 ounces.
