Tennis Glossary Continued

tennisTennis Elbow - Tennis elbow is a name that is intended to describe a condition that can be caused by the strains which are frequently put on that joint in the course of playing the game of tennis, although that is not the only way to cause it. Tennis elbow can also go by the name tendinitis

Thirty - In the standard tennis scoring system, thirty is the second point that is scored in a game.

Throat - On a tennis racquet, the area where the head meets the handle of the instrument is known as the throat.

Tie-Break - In tennis a tiebreaker can also be commonly referred to as a tie-break.

Tiebreaker - A tiebreaker is the way to determine the winner of a tied set. One of the most popular methods of breaking a tie is the 13-point tiebreaker. With this method, the first player to reach 7 points is the winner, provided that they also have a lead of at least 2 points. Because of the required lead, this method of tiebreaking is often referred to as “Lingering Death” as opposed to “Sudden Death” which goes simply to the first player to 7 points.

Top Seed - The top seed in a tournament is the player that has been chosen ahead of time to be that competition's best. This judgment is usually determined by a computer based on recent performance of all of the competitors.

Topspin - Topspin is applied to a tennis ball by moving the strings of the rackets upwards and above the ball. This will cause the ball to spin in the direction that it is travelling in around the horizontal axis. Applying topspin can help keep a ball in play as it will make a sharper drop after reaching the top of its flight and bounce higher than a normally hit ball tends to.

Touch - Touch refers to the precision and control with which a shot was made, this can help a player make good placement on their shots. “That was a great shot, she really put an amazing touch on it.”

Triple - In a tennis tournament the term triple refers to the impressive achievement of one team winning the championships for singles and both categories of doubles.

Twist - Twist refers to a shot in which a player places both topspin as well as sidespin onto the ball when making a serve. There are different methods of doing this, among them are the reverse twist and also the American twist.

Two-Handed Backhand - A two-handed back hand is quite simply a backhand made while the player is holding the tennis racket with both of their hands.

Underspin - Underspin is another name for backspin.

Unforced Error - An unforced error refers to a point loss that is the result of an improperly made shot that either hits the net or lands somewhere outside of the court.
