Here is a continuation of the tennis glossary of terms that we have been working on for some time now.
Round - In an elimination tournament a round is a set of matches where the winners of the matches move up to compete in the next round.
Round Robin - A round robin tournament is sometimes used as a preliminary round for purposes of order of play and seedings. This is determined by having all players compete against all the other players and the finals standings are based upon the win-loss record.
Run Around the Backhand - To run around the backhand a player makes a disproportionate amount of movement in order to position themselves to play the ball on the forehand instead of on the backhand.
Runback - This is the area that lies between the backstop and the baseline.
Run down - This means reaching and returning a shot that would normally be difficult for the player to get to.
Scoring system - The scoring system used in modern tennis has its roots in the medieval period and a game known as court tennis. In the game of court tennis the game consisted of four rounds of play, each round lasting fifteen points. This is where the sport of lawn tennis, as the game used to be known, inherited its scoring system with the points labeled 15, 30, 45, and 60, or game. At some point in time, the 45 score was then shortened into 40. The point is the base of the scoring system, followed by the game which is won by the points, a series of grouped games is called a set, and a series of sets is called a match.
Second flight - The second flight is simply the flight of the ball after it has bounced.
Seed - Seeding is the process in which the players are ranked according to their current record and their current set of skills prior to a tournament. The term seed refers to the rankings the players are given, for example the highest ranked player would be the top seed. Using the seeds, the matches in the tournament are selected to spread out the top-seeded players in a fashion so that they will not compete against each other too early in the tournament.
Serve and volley- This is a play style in which the server will move into the forecourt to take the net after a valid serve in order to be able to volley the return.
Server - The server is the player currently serving the ball in the current match.
Service - This is simply another word that is used to describe a serve. See "Serve" for more information.
