Tennis Glossary pt2

tennisNet Cord - This is the cable that is responsible for supporting the net.

Net Cord Judge - This is an official that is responsible for calling a let on service. This judge will sit up in front of the chair of the umpire on one end of the net, and he or she will rest one hand at the top of the net to feel any vibrations that occur if the ball should happen to make contact with the net cord.

Net Game - This is a playing style where the player takes absolutely every possible opportunity in order to rush the net. This is the opposite of the baseline game of tennis.

Net Man - In doubles, this is the partner that is stationed closest to the net during the service by the other partner.

No Man's Land - This is the area that is between the service line and the base line. This area is known as No man's land because when a player is caught there, they find it difficult to hit any ground strokes, and they are not close enough to hit slams either.

Not Up - This is a ball that is hit just as it begins to bounce for the second time, resulting in the loss of a point.

Offensive Lob - This is a lob that is made in an attempt to score rather than simply being made for the purpose of defense. It is typically hit in a very deep manner into the opponent's side of the court when the opponent is close to the net.

Offensive Volley - This is a volley that is typically hit from above the net and is intended to score a point.

Open Tournament - There were two types of tournaments in the early days of the game, closed tournaments and open tournaments. In open tournaments, non-members of the club were also allowed to play in addition to members of the club. With the invention of professional tennis, open tournaments became tournaments where both amateurs and professionals could both play. Today most if not all tennis tournaments are considered to be "opens".

Open Grip - This is a grip where the face of the racquet is tilted upward and away from the tennis court.

Open Racquet - This is a racquet that is being held in an open grip.

Out - This describes a shot that does not land in the playing area, but rather goes long or wide instead.

Overhead - This is a shot that is similar to a serve, where the ball is above the head of the player.

Overspin - This is another word for topspin.

Pace - This is the speed by which the ball is struck, and it is commonly used to indicate a lot of speed.

Pair - This is a doubles team.

Partner - This is one out of the two players on a single doubles team.
