Court - The length of the tennis court is 78 feet and the width of the tennis court is 27 feet when dealing with singles matches. For doubles matches, the length remains the same but the court is 36 feet in width. The court is divided along its middle with the tennis net. There are service lines, which are marked at 21 feet from each of the sides of the net as well as parallel to it. The area that is bounded by the service line and the singles sidelines is divided into two different parts, known as the service courts, by way of a center service line. This line is halfway between the two sidelines and is parallel to them.
Court Tennis - This is the ancestor that came before modern style tennis, and it was apparently developed back during the Middle Ages. It was played in courtyards in monasteries and in castles, and it eventually was played by nobles and kings. The scoring system for this style of tennis is quite complex and complicated, and modern tennis has simplified it significantly. Court tennis is also commonly referred to as real tennis, but real is meant to refer to the Spanish word for "Royal tennis".
Cross Court - This is a shot that is hit from one of the sides of the court to the other side while crossing the net.
Default - This is the failure or the refusal of a tennis player to complete or take part in a match, which results in the automatic victory for the opposing player.
Deuce - When players are tied at three points each, at 40, the score is known as a deuce. A player needs to win two points in a row at this point in order for them to win the game. If they split the following two points, then the score reverts back to being deuce again.
Double Fault - The server is given only two attempts to create a valid serve. If he or she fails both of these attempts, it is ruled as a double fault and the receiver will automatically receive a point.
Double Hit - This is the act of striking a single ball two times during one single stroke, which results in the loss of a point.
Doubles - This is a match that occurs between two different teams of two different players.
Drag Volley - This is a type of volley hit that involves a backspin.
Draw - This is the process that arranges matches while scheduling them for a tournament. Seeded players are scheduled before the draw. The schedule itself is also known as the Draw.
Drop Shot - This is a soft shop dropping just over the net. Backspin is usually used in order to minimize the amount of bounce that the ball receives.
