Tennis Glossary pt6

tenError - This is a shot that did not manage to make it across the net, or that landed out of the court, and this will result in a loss of the point.

Face - This is the racquet's flat area, one that is formed by way of the strings and then bounded by the racquet's frame.

Fault - This is an invalid attempt at a serve. If the serve does not land in the service court of the receiver then the result is a fault.

Flat - This defines a shot that is low, fast and straight without any spin.

Follow Through - This is the motion that the arm and the racquet take once the ball has been struck.

Forced Error - This is an error that results from a good shot taken by the opponent.

Forecourt - This is the area between the service line and the net on the tennis court.

Forehand - This is a shot that is hit from the side of the player's body where the racquet is. For a right handed player, forehand is played with the right side.

Forty / 40 - This is the third point in the game for either of the players or sides. If both players reach forty, then it is known as a deuce.

Frame - This is the racquet's oval portion which contains the strings as well as a racquet that is as yet unstrung.

Gallery - This is the spectator area where people are watching the match.

Game Point - This is the point that is going to end the game if either player or side wins it.

Grand Slam - This is a series of four events, the French Open, the Australian Open, the US Open and Wimbledon from Europe.

Ground Stroke - This is a stroke that is hit from the back of the court or from behind the baseline, after the ball has been given a chance to bounce once. The groundstroke is the standard stroke in tennis games.

Half Court - This is the area of the court that is around the service line.

Half Court Line - This is another name that refers to the service line in the center of the court.

Head - This is the part of the racquet where the frame and the strings are.

Heavy Ball - This is a ball that is hit with topspin, allowing it to drop in a sharp manner.

Hold Serve - This has to do with winning a game where you were the server.

In - This is a description that means that a shot was good and lands properly in the court belonging to the opponent.

Jam - This means hitting the ball at the body of the opponent, which forces a return that is awkward or otherwise weak.

Kill - This has to do with hitting the ball into an area where the opponent is unable to reach it.
